Don't really need to unplug. Just switch off the power plug circuit breaker. Chuck

As far as your question, my guess is you'll get the click and higher voltage whether plugged into shore or not.
Thanks, I always thought since shore power charges the house batteries, if I stayed plugged in and started the engine, the alternator would not send charge to the house batteries.

They both can and it's not a problem. Both charging sources are voltage regulated so they won't overcharge.

I run my engine a little while plugged in when I am getting ready to leave. No issues.

I am ok with generator and shore power connected at the same time.
I try not to switch from generator to shore with any heavy loads on.
My ATS has an air gap. The coach can only be connected to shore or generator. Never both.

Sure the less load the better when switching. But when I am on shore power and have my auto generator start enabled if I lose shore power the system will start the generator and switch under load.

If you have auto transfer switch, no need to Unplug. It auto defaults to GEN when GEN Power available

<<... my auto generator start enabled if I lose shore power the system will start the generator and switch under load.>>> You are NOT switching UNDER LOAD, as you lost shore power and there is a DELAY during START/ SPEED UP, AND AIR COND power loss causes delayed restart (usually 3+minutes?) so pressures equalize.
