1995 American Coach. Generator keeps stopping after a few minutes.
Hi folks. Our neighbour has a 1995 American coach. He has a DKD Cummins generator. Looks to be non inverter type. His genny was running nicely and then quit. Now it won't run for more than a few minutes. Regular maintenance. Not ignored. Any help would be appreciated.

How long since the fuel filter was changed? I would remove filter, cut it apart and inspect it. People tend to neglect the fuel that goes into their rig and it develops gunk that plugs the filter. This is where I'd start.

(Most) GEN issues, both gas and diesel, are either fuel or Oil/ Oil Pressure/ oil Level, so check oil level/ oil filter/ oil pressure switch, and then Fuel Filter and Fuel Pump. E.g. marginal oil level can drop too low after running and distributing oil into heads/ galleys can let a switch drop out.

Friend had same problem...broken fan belt. Unlike him, your's may be easy to change being that old, it may not be in an enclosed cabinet.

Radar,
A DKD is actually an Onan, and they are used in lots of small power equipment, so if you get hung up, find a small engine shop.

One more THOUGHT: Make sure thermostat/ switches have A/C Unit OFF; GEN starting w/ air ON can many times stall GEN before it gets going, esp. if COLD GEN in COLD weather.

Thanks for the input. I’ll check with his operating practices. We are starting on the fault finding on Tuesday or Wednesday. We’ll report back.

That would be a DKDFJ and has a Kubota D 950 Engine, it has 3 oil pressure switches. I've never in the last 25 years seen one of those go bad.
Is this a Side external Radiator or is the Radiator right on the unit ?
Shut down symptoms ? does it just shut off or does it slowly shut down. If it slowly shuts down it's running out of fuel- IE Fuel pump- it would also be difficult to re-start.
It it just shuts off and you can see the Fuel shutoff solenoid just click off --Its a sender - Temp- or Overheat issue.
These Older DK's Run for thousands of hours and are extremely reliable and easy to maintain.
I have all of the manuals if you need them.

Real good info. I’m printing this one off to have it handy when we start.
Thank you.

Not sure and can’t ask till Tuesday. The owner has gone back to LA for a few days. We are in Palm Springs. I’ll ask on Tuesday. What is your concern on the full load shut down? We avoid it like the plague with ours. I’ve head it is not a good thing.
