2011 Ford Explorer / Tow Dolly

Hello,

I normally tow my Mini Cooper behind our Motorhome which does not have a steering lock. Tomorrow however, we will be towing a 2011 Ford Explorer and I'm not sure of the steering lock status on it. The Explorer is an Automatic with Front Wheel Drive (not all wheel drive). I tow with an Acme Tow Dolly so it is imperative that the front wheels will move (steer) while underway.

My Question -

Is it necessary to do anything with the car key?

Leave it in the ignition in the 'off' position?
Leave it in the ignition in the 'on' position?
Leave it in the ignition in the 'accessory' position?
Take it out of the ignition and put it in my pocket :-) ?

I appreciate your input...Thanks!

John

What does the manufacturer of the towed vehicle say about towing it with a dolly? Always consult the manufacturer's requirements or specs when deciding how to safely tow something. This is not rocket science. It's also not opinion or conjecture.
If you take the advice of the "experts" on here, you do so at your own risk and peril. And that of others, who may be near you when you're towing.

We tow a 2012. Basically the same vehicle. It has a steering lock that has to be unlocked or use a dolly that steers.

I have a 2011 explorer that I tow 4 down with no problems all I do is turn off all acc. And leave it in acc mode and it's good to go. I have a charge wire to keep battery up.
