8000 Onan Wont start after exhaust clogged...
Yes, made a huge error by easing into a dirt sidewall with my diesel Onan 8000 exhaust. Ran for a couple of minutes without me knowing it and then just died. I looked around and saw the problem. The end of the exhaust was about an inch into a dirt wall leaving a huge black smudge.
Tried restarting it and it would run on one cyclinder for a few strokes and then go dead. That happened a few times and then the starter motor turns all you want but the engine isn't firing at all. I dont smell fuel or no white smoke. I hold the kill side of the start switch down for a minute and more and turn the starter over 10 to 15 seconds each for 2 or 3 times, with repeated prime steps again.
How to get it started?
Did plugging the exhaust hurt anything?
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP...........God bless........Dennis

I think its more likely sensor/control board related than physical damage.

So what does this mean and how to fix it............YES FIRST THING CLEANED OUT DIRT. Actually wasn't much loose up in it. The blockage was just pushing against the dirt wall and closing/clogging exit of gas............

I wish I knew but not being there its hard to say. But there is a chance that it sensed excessive back pressure or insufficient intake volume and shut itself down to prevent damage. Some sort of re-set might correct it, but it will take an Onan expert to get you closer to an answer. I just don't think a temporary exhaust blockage would cause enough physical damage to disable the unit.

I wonder if that happen to break loose lots of carbon all at once and plugged the exhaust spark arrestor.

WAG... every time I just think I bumped something... I find out I did more damage then what I can see.. so.. could it be possible you twisted the exhaust pipe.. or pulled off a sensor some how.. seems it would be.. too good to be true.. all that happened was dirt in exhaust... if you hit bank .. with enough force to get dirt in it.. you most likely are not going to get away with just cleaning plug out..
So.. extensive inspection of entire exhaust.. look for twist or crimped pipes.. missing sensor.. ect..
After complete tear down of muffler.. if above does not help..
Then.. I would reset everything..
I would remove neg off coach and chassis battery for 15mins..
Then put back on..
Maybe they will reset computers..
Good luck and let us know what you did and maybe better members then me will help you

Did you get a “blink code” when pushing the start button on the genset?

Turns out it was/is NOTHING THAT I DID!!!!
I went under the generator to check out stuff. My backing into the dirt wall was the result of bringing it home from the "shop". The local Freightliner dealer in Chattanooga. There they had done a complete 60,000 mile "tune up" that included pulling the fuel tank to fix a faulty fuel sending unit in the tank. Was quite the job as it was MANY hours of high dollar labor.
The Generator, as I cranked on it for a total of several minutes, was acting like an engine that wasnt getting fuel. Every now and then a sputter; but basically just turning and turning while running down the battery.
Time for the check of the 3 necessities. Fuel, air, compression/fire. The easiest to check first is fuel. So, underneath, pull the from the tank fuel line............NOTHING.....With a horse wormer syringe that holds perhaps a cup, I injected all of that INTO the intake of where the fuel line hooks up to the generator............WHA FREAKING LAHHHH .....IT STARTED RIGHT UP AND RAN!!!!!!
As I am leaving for Key West in a couple of days, it's time to take it back to Freightliner for repairs as they had been the last ones to remove those fuel lines and fool with them when they removed the tank........Called them.....Heading over there in a couple of hours for them to finish a job that should've included a test running of the gen-set for several minutes rather than seconds................GOD IS GOOD TO ME...........amen

well that makes a lot more sense than clogging the exhaust causing damage to the unit. Good to hear - another hassle but at least its not on you!
