ANY NEED for ONAN Generator mobile repair?

GOOD DAY !!
Wanted to ask the fellowship if you have had a need for a mobile generator tech to come help and repair generators.. I ask because I have had really minimal issues thru the years but not sure how other folks have faired..

Thanks!!
Bob

Not here. But then again I have a pretty new unit. I try to be on top of oil changes and I exercise the Onan once per month under load for about 20-30 minutes religiously. Also, I invested early in solar panels and have 900 watts up top going through 2 controllers not only to relieve some reliance on the generator but as a reliable redundant power source.

I sure could have used one in Phoenix a few years ago. We were boondocking at a dog show and my 7500 decided to puke magnets. We were completely screwed. There was an RV tech there, but the repairs were well beyond his scope. There was a local shop who could have probably done the work, but we decided to leave the show early and move along to our next destination which had full hookups.

I would think that if you orbited around locations that had a lot of boondockers, there may be a decent demand. That RV tech I mentioned was the only one there and he stayed busy the entire three days we were there.

As I recall there are Cummins authorized service places in the Phoenix area. Don't know if any are mobile. I know that because I was looking for a service place nearer to Sedona and didn't find any, mobile or otherwise.

We purchased a used coach with low mileage in great condition , but the generator hadn't been used or exercised in years .

It would start but only run for a few seconds .

Found a local mobile RV mechanic that was Onan Certified .

Found the problem , gummed up carburator . He replaced the carb and all existing rubber fuel lines to ethanol compliant lines .

He did a great job , timely and reasonable rates .

I would say a aquahot, and onan specialist could stay busy enough in fulltimer areas. Problem is rv park permission to actually do sevice work like oil changes and boiler fluid changes. I think most will allow if you're equipped to not chance a spill.

I could have used one in south-central Florida; ended up with nitwits that wanted me to pull out the generator through the front of the MH, bring it to the shop and then they would charge me $1500 to diagnose it.

A couple of months later I stopped at Cummins Ocala; the tech cleaned the brushes and slip rings and fix it right up. Cost about $200. No removal etc.

Yes I need work on my generator. It provides AC just fine. However after 10 minutes the converter/charger stops charging the batteries. One guy looked at it and thinks it is putting out dirty power and the converter is essentially refusing it. He thinks a solution will be some kind of filter.

It stops powering the charger but still powers the other 120 volt things like the AC, fridge, water heater and outlets ?

What about the 12 volt items, do they keep working with the battery switch off ?

Actually, I ended up having to have a mobile Onan fellow come out on a new, 2019 32SA I had at the time. I had already had it back to the dealer under warranty and they could not find a problem. The mobile guy figured the general problem, got the parts, and fixed under warranty. This was on a QG7000.

High Desert and Bill Gail: Where were these mobile Onan techs and how did you find them?

Over nighted in Chillicothe Ohio at Walmart and generator would not start. 90+ degrees. Called Randy's RV Repair. Generator would try to start but shut back down. He came out, cleaned all fuel systems but finally found a pinched wire to fuel pump. He then checked out the entire wiring system for any more problems. He worked on it for 1.5 hours and charged my $150 plus service call. Very satisfied.

We live 30 miles North of Seattle , Wa.

In our case , I Googled " Onan certified RV Mobile Mechanic near me " .

I then took the mechanics names and checked with a local small RV parts shop for their opinion on the best mechanic .

I also had the mechanic do the Dometic secondary burner modification to our Dometic frig .

He was able to get us in and repaired before CW could even get us scheduled , and at half the cost .

The tech I used was listed online in Redmond, Or. When last I spoke with him, he was taking on a teaching position, so don't know if he still does this, or not.
