We have a Compass warranty and it has more than paid for itself. We have had it for about 5 years and plan on renewing next year. We bought it through Apalachee RV center whom I can also recommend.

It isn't perfect and don't expect to go in with a big job and have everything go super smooth. The warranty company will want to review everything and that slows things down. Additionally if a component is no longer available the replacement may be considered and upgrade and you'll only get it partially paid for.

We had a slide problem and we ended up paying over $1000 because the system was an upgrade but that was a lot better than the $5K or $6K total.

I would say they have been fair and honest but definitely protect their interest which is good because they can stay in business that way.

Ideally you'll get a warranty and never use it. Why? Because that means you never have any problems which is perfection.

The best warranty is a high interest savings account, like Capital One. Take what you would spend on the extended warranty and put it into the savings account and add $100 each month. Then use that to pay for any repairs. in the long run you will be money ahead.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined us!

I know that extended warranties on RV's pay off for some folks, but I think that, in MOST cases, you would be money ahead to take that same amount of money and put it into a special bank account to be used only for repairs! Those companies leave themselves too many loopholes to get out of paying your claims! JMHO

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

There are two kinds of RVers - those that buy warranties and those that don't.

Both approaches make some sense. You just have to figure out which kind of RVer you are.

HINT: These are not "warrenties" they are "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance." As with all insurance it's a gamble. The insurance company is betting that you'll not cost them more than what you've paid them. And you are betting that you will.

Guess who wins on this bet the majority of the time? The insurance company, of course. If they didn't win a majority of the time they would go out of business.

One thing to note - one way the insurance company improves their odds of winning the bet is by making contracts difficult to know what's covered and what is not. By adding layers of approval/rejection to any repairs. By slowing down the entire process to keep you from using the system on minor repairs. And by charging a deductible that is applied PER REPAIR so that multiple repairs at the same time can incur multiple deductibles.

Obviously, not getting a Service Contract (remember it's not a Warranty) is a bet as well. On one hand you know you've kept thousands of dollars in your bank account. That's a sure thing. But will that pay off before you sell the RV is other side of the bet.

You decide.

This is what is good about the Compass warranty it is very easy to read and it clearly covers what isn't covered. It includes consequential damage. There have been no loop holes pulled on us.

On average this is probably the best strategy. Even though "high interest" right now is .005 (.5%) you will probably win. Even if you get a good warranty that actually pays claims unless you have claims during the life of the warranty and your ownership it will be a loosing proposition. If you get one of the bad warranties, and it looks like most of them are bad, you will be completely screwed and end up paying for the warranty and the repairs.

People don't use their RV's as much as they think. They sell the RV before the warranty expires. The RV is fairly simple with nothing that complex or expensive that is covered. The RV gets damaged in an accident and totaled. They don't like waiting for the RV to be repaired because the warranty company slows the process down. They don't want to be bothered with small claims so they don't go in for a service. They choose to have a mobile tech out to do the work which isn't typically covered. There are probably 100 other things warranty companies know about that keep you from getting your value.

So if you are average then a warranty will not pay.

If you are however like us and live in an expensive complicated RV and know how to make the system work for you it probably will. For us the financial advantage to the toon of at least $4000 dollars above the premium. One of our advantages is I know how to make broken things work until I get in. We'll be getting by with 2 or 3 systems hacked enough for our purposes until we get into the shop with a laundry list of repairs and only the $100 deductible per visit.

Very happy it's worked out for you.
Compass is operated by American Guardian Insurance and here is the official take on their service contract offerings from Consumer Affairs:

Quote:
While it’s good that American Guardian covers diverse vehicles and has transferable warranties, consumer reviews are overwhelmingly negative, citing high-pressure sales tactics and frustrating experiences with customer service. If you are considering coverage from American Guardian, try getting quotes from several companies first. This helps set better expectations for pricing and customer service so you can make an informed decision.

This is so true. The advertisements and sales pitch make you think "I buy this and I'm home free no worries" People buy these things and don't read them and don't shop them and end up completely disappointed. There are so many things they don't cover. If you think this warranty is going to zero out your repair cost or that you're going to just show up and they'll pay the bills that isn't going to happen. When you pull into the shop you had better expect there to be a lot of back and forth and there is practically no way you're going to get out with just the $100 deductible on anything complicated. For our microwave, and inverter it was very straightforward and the paid for everything. For the slide it was maybe 80% covered. I'll wager if you have a big mechanical thing like a transmission it is going to be a long slog to get them to pay their fair share. But if you know the contract and are willing to work with them it can be done. Compass has not violated the terms of the contract and the contract is not hard to read.

The most important advice is to read the contract and understand the conditions. DO NOT RELY ON WHAT THE SALES PERSON OR FINANCE GUY TELLS YOU. All that matters is what is written in the contract. They cannot change a written contract verbally. Yes, they lie.

I have never purchased an extended warranty on anything and never regretted it. There are exceptions to this but if the insurance companies weren’t making good money on them, they would never offer them.
