Buying advice - 2015 Navion 24m - 1st time RV'er

We found the perfect coach after many months of searching. Its a one owner, 20K miles trade in with clean carfax and no issues. The owner just traded it in at the same dealership he purchased it at (his 4th coach). The dealer is very reputable and has been in business for 30 years. I got lucky and found this coach prior to it being listed. We agreed on a price subject to inspection so yesterday my wife and I drove 5 hrs to check it out. The dealer had it fully detailed and it was very clean and ready when we arrived. We took it out and loved the ride and floorplan so we decided to purchase it. We found a few small issues like a looses screw and loose molding. The only real concern I had was with the battery enclosure which has some corrosion from what appears to be some battery leakage. They are looking into this.

I told the dealer my next step was to have an inspector come by to go thru the coach. He told me it was a waste of time and to save my $$. He said the dealer does a full inspection and fixes any issues and that I will have a full 3 hr orientation when I pick it up on April 12th. They extend a 90 day bumper to bumper warranty plus it has 1 year left on the coach warranty from WB and 1 year left on the drivetrain from MB. This sounded reasonable to me so we signed the paperwork and now we will be transferring the payment on Monday.

Since the dealership is 5 hrs away, I hate the idea of having to bring it back to get any repairs done. My question is this, does it still make sense to have a full independent inspection done by an NRVIA tech?

Two thoughts...

- hire an inspector and have him/her do a full inspection prior to picking up the coach. I would request that the dealer have it hooked up an ready for this

- bring the inspector with me when I do the orientation to ensure everything is okey dokey.

Any input would be appreciated.

Even though the dealer may be reputable, there are issue that the RV may have that he hasn't picked up on. If you feel comfortable, have an independent inspection done to satisfy you and the dealer. Get it done before you take delivery, so that if there are any issues the dealer can take care of them before you stand there, waiting for it to get done.

Buying advice - 2015 Navion 24m - 1st time RV'er

Winnebago's warranty is only 1 year overall, so that has already expired. The dealer is incorrect. The time left on the Mercedes warranty does make sense from what they quote. We have a 2008 View -H. The -M is what we would buy if our budget would have allowed due to its couch, cabover, dinette and rear bath setup like the -H, but the added bonus in the -M of the dinette and couch on the slide. It seems to me that you are doing the right thing by getting a 3rd party inspection. Even if it is $500, it doesn't seem like a waste of money to do so, especially on what may be your most expensive purchase other than a home. Any items that can be fixed before driving off the lot will be done as a punchdown list. The 90 days is useful insurance too, but a short window to find remaining problems. http://www.winnebagoind.com/resources/service/ has the warranty information. Each RV we have owned we have uncovered issues after the sale, even from a reputable dealer. In our case the two different dealers made it right, but not all have the service we experienced.

Even with the inspection, there will be things that are missed that you may find later - just like in a home inspection. If you can get a chance to see it after a long rain, that is a good opportunity. I found several RVs we didn't purchase because they had water intrusion issues revealed in the rain. Check out the bathroom skylight area, roof vents, antenna entry points, the cabover, inside all cabinets, etc. for evidence of water. We caught one on a bathroom skylight (crack, hidden) before it became an issue. It was revealed by the dealer doing a leak pressure test when I brought up other issues to rectify and they fixed it (at significant expense to them) at no cost to me.

I would also have the inspection done. Remember the dealer is there to make money and doing after the sale warranty work is sometimes challenging.
