Carefree of Colorado ? ........Again!

Our awning is 18ft. Over a year ago we had the dreaded "Awning Flied Open' while doing 60mph on I-5. But it rolled back up, I wrapped the arms, and we came home.

We've used this awning a few times since then, no problem. A few days ago we opened it, but it wouldn't retract the next day. I wound it by hand and got it ALMOST all the way in, secured it, and drove home.

Now......I'm finding it difficult to believe both springs broke at the exact same time. AND I've read a few posts here that suggest I probably shouldn't attempt this repair anyway, unless I enjoy sitting around the emergency room for endless hours. Could something else be wrong????

Is this a manual or powered awning?

It's a manual Fiesta model. Aluma shield and remote lock. We take care of it, and it's a nice awning. This is why I cant understand the problem. One spring...OK. But not both. I'm guessing there's a part in the middle of the tube that the 3 tipped part on the inside end of the spring sets in, but I don't even know that.

I'm one guy that tries to do a lot of my own work and tried to work on the awning on my Winnebago trailer when I had it. One slip of the hand, and I came darned close to permanently damaging a finger....luckily, I only needed some stitches and then some physical therapy. But it was awfully close to putting a halt to my music hobby! If it involves the tension springs....get the job done by an rv repair shop.

Can't help you solve your current problem. Once you get it fixed, you might want to add this to prevent future problems.

If the age of your MH is the age of your awning 18 yrs, then I suspect that your springs are shot. Nothing to strip inside the roller tube its shape is how the springs set in and wind. Around $200 for both springs and if you follow the instructions from Carefree, not a hard job at all. Did mine this past summer, 14 years old, and also replaced the fabric. You will need help, we did it with three of us.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Internet broke!

Verakin, thanx for the link. I searched for locks, but tat never showed up in the results.

jmerrit….The awning is 18 ft. It's actually 19+ years old. I spoke with a rep from Carefree, and she was very helpful. Sent me a PDF on the awning repairs, and I watched several vids on the Tube. I found the springs with end caps for about 240 total, free shipping. I'll go this route and give it a try.
