Carpet Glue Removal

I have started the process of redoing my flooring in my National Class A gasser. I started with the engine cover because it seemed like a good place to begin. Getting the carpet off wasn't too bad, it was pretty old and sun baked anyway but I have come across an issue that I haven't quite figured out how to deal with. The carpet was glued down and stapled and while I have removed the staples, the glue was both thick and gooey. It looks like contact cement. My original plan had been to simply sand down what I expected to be hardened glue but sanding at this point is out of the question. It is more like rubber than anything. I have tried baking it a bit with a heat gun and natural sunlight but it seems to be immune. Heat it enough and it melts a little but not very well. Chemical removal might be an option but at this stage, I'm not sure what to use. Varsol seems to clean the tools I have tried to scrape with but that isn't really eating through it that well either and it would take soaking in a vat to remove it all. Anybody have a miracle product or solution? All I really want to do is smooth it down in preparation for the replacement material. I would even consider freezing it if I had a walk in freezer to put it in.

They make a contact cement solvent that you can brush on and scrape the old cement off. The residue comes off like a gum. You need to keep the area that you are working on moist with the solvent.

You need to work in a very well ventilated area other wise the fumes can be nauseating. The product is safe with a few restrictions.
