Checking frequency output and voltage output of Onan 5000 Genset Generator.

How do you check the frequency and voltage output of an Onan 5000 Genset Emerald Series Generator? Proper frequency output should be 62 hz and voltage output should be around 120 v.

The electronics of the generator should control frequency and voltage. If you want to check it, you could get a Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor that gives a readout of volts, frequency, watts consumed on anything plugged into it.

Generator Frequency and Voltage output

Thanks for the reply to my post and recommendation for the P3 analyzer on generator frequency and voltage output. My generator had been choking down shortly after turning on one of my 110 v. A/C compressors the last time or two I had run it under load. I cleaned the in line fuel filter and reset the throttle screw to increase the RPM slightly which fixed the choke down issue but I want to make sure I have not exceeded the recommended frequency and voltage output on the generator. I purchased the MH about 2 years ago. I have run the generator under load once a month for about 45 min each time. The hour meter shows only 40 hours. I thought this was a good thing that the generator was such low hours when I purchased the MH, but am told that it may not be a good thing. Oil level is good. Have checked the air filter which seems OK. Not sure if cleaning the fuel filter fixed the problem or the adjustment of the throttle screw fixed the problem. Did not try running it under load until I adjusted the throttle screw

Try Sea Foam to see if that will clean up generator. Available at most automotive stores, and does a great job of restoring engines to their original condition.

The P3 is a great idea. Definitely better than trying to find a meter. Most meters with a frequency sense ability will be at least $100 or way more.
