Class B+/C: Diesel vs Gas

I'm in the market for a motor home and have studied Class A's for some time, know a diesel chassis is much better for ride and climbing mountains. Now, with our looking at more traveling, Nat'l Parks, Alaska trip, we're thinking drive-ability will be more important than lots of space for snowbirding/extended stay. is upgrading to a diesel as important as in a Class A in a larger B+ or C, say 30'? Is four wheel drive important for boondocking on BLM land? I'm not looking at overlanding, just not getting stuck in mud on BLM or Forest Service roads. Thanks for any thoughts.

Unless you go custom or old you will not find diesel in a 30 ft C or B. Ditto 4WD.

There are 3 basic chassis suppliers for class C. Chevy used to but dropped out. Ford does the E-350 and E-450 chassis with the V-10 in gas. That covers the whole range of C & B offerings. They also do the Transit van as a diesel but it is new and comparable to the Mercedes - short, light weight models. Mercedes builds a light chassis in diesel used for roughly 26 ft or less with varying towing capacity. AFAIK none come in a factory 4WD package. There used to he a fire/ambulance chassis that was 4WD and/or diesel but it has not been made for some time.

Don't do BLM so will leave that to the experts from out there. ;-)

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

You have to decide whether the added comfort and drive ability of the DP is worth it! To me it's a no-brainer!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

OldSalt,

I would check out the BLM episode on YouTube of the ‘Grand Adventurer’. He talks specifically about Boondocking on BLM...

We haven’t had any issues Boondocking with our 24’ class C MB Sprinter chassis 3.0 litre Diesel.

Thanks for the feedback.. I just put a deposit down on a LTV Unity on a Mercedes sprinter chassis. Won't wander too far off the beaten path.
