Converting Bunk Beds to Shelving/Storage. Ideas?

We have a bunkhouse motorhome. The grandkids love it and we love having them along during the summer.

But soon we’ll be retiring and out on our own in the RV at least 1/2 the year. For those long trips I’d love to convert the bunks into an organized storage area that I could easily convert back into bunk beds in short order. I’m looking for ideas and pictures from others who have done this.

Our top bunk folds up with hinges and locks in place almost flat against the wall. We can then put in the clothes hanger bar and we have 78" of added hanging space and the lower bunk is available for tubs purses shoes or whatever. We usually put down a new moving blanket on the bottom to protect the bottom sleeping area if we put shoes or tubs down. With the doors closed its an additional HUGE closet space.

In these pictures below, the top is shown set up for sleeping... and the bottom has the bunk folded up and the hanging bar placed for use. This was done by Fleetwood at the factory brand new, I have not added or changed anything.

Hope this helps.

P.S. if you add a signature line to your profile, you can enter the year, make, and model of your coach, so we can all know what you have to help you better. Look at the bottom of mine for example. It doesn't cost anything to add it.

Good Luck!

It is possible that the upper bunk does fold up to give extra hanging space. I would go to Walmart or wherever and get an assortment of Rubbermaid or other brand of storage bins. I don't know your storage situation, but the bunk mattresses could be stored under your bed, if room or in a clean basement storage area. Very simple to return to bunk bed or beds, what ever you need.

I don’t think the bed folds up, but I’ve never checked it. So that’s the first thing I’ll do.

If I were going to do that, I would simply use well labeled storage bins, sizes as needed. If the top bunk could be flipped up and secured but useable as a bunk when needed, I would figure out a way to get more storage for hanging clothes. I'm thinking removable wall brackets for holding a bar. And, then it boils down to whether to use something like curtains or figure out how to put removable doors to hide the bunk area.

So you convert the bunks to storage area, an idea I have embraced, then what do you do with the stuff you have stored there when the grand kids come. Put it in the basement? I'm betting that's already pretty full. Put it in the toad? Then how do you take the grand kids anywhere? My point being you need to think about the next step after you convert the area to storage. I my particular case there is enough other sleeping space to accommodate the 2 grand kids when they come. If you need the space for folks to sleep might I suggest an inflatable mattress, they're pretty comfortable, easy to store and eliminate any need to rearrange space. Just something to think about.

I’ve thought about it (a little). Any ‘conversion’ we do will be temporary. We’ll be out about 2 weeks per year with the grandkids and about 6 months per year on our own. So when we have the grandkids, then I’ll pull the stuff out and stash it in the basement (which is not very full) or leave it at home. We are mainly talking about linens, clothing, small appliances, camera gear, etc. It’s all stuff we stash on the bunk beds now, I’d just like to have it a little more organized.
