Took the Alpine in to Cummins/Onan for Onan repairs and while there thought I'd have the engine checked out. This engine is a '99 ISC with 44,000 miles. Here is their list:
2 engine speed sensors
leaking drain plug and oil filter (just serviced by Lazy Days in FL in April)
both belts need replacing
While the above comes under maintainence the BIG one is a coolant leak (external). Cummins says I need a head gasket. At 44,000 miles?
Has anyone else had to replace an ISC head gasket?

That sounds highly unusual. Many of these engines go hundreds of thousands of miles without blowing a head gasket. Has anyone tried to turn up the power on the motor via a performance enhancing box?

If not it sounds like a call to Cummins, although you are probably out of warranty. It's worth a shot.........

I've heard of a few premature blown HG's on the ISC's in OTR trucks. Have you tested the coolant?

has it ever been topped off, possibly with the wrong type? I'd get some test strips and see where the coolant PH levels are at.

I've done a few Cummins in-frames on trucks. Genberally I've seen head gaskets leak due to either of two reasons. First, if the cooling system isn't taken care of (check your SCA levels and keep the thing fresh and scale free) the water leaks can start. Secondly, if a given driver runs them hard then shuts them off hot, the heat buildup causes warpage and they'll leak. Leaving a hot diesel idle for a while to cool off is a big help in that area.
