We were on our way to western Canada and Alaska this summer, and they seldom have DEF at the pump (cold weather). We actually had to buy boxes of DEF to take with us. Contrary to some beliefs, I am not concerned about DEF shortages, but I am concerned about artificial shortages due to hoarding. Our local stores have no shortages; there were pallets everywhere I have looked.

By my count there are approx. 5=7 different threads about a supposed DEF shortage. This one is 9 pages long.
If a DEF shortage actually existed, it would shut North America down to a standstill. No groceries, fuel, clothing, etc would be available to purchase.
This is fear mongering on a level of 10, IMO. Excuse me, I've gotta go lock my cargo container of toilet paper___.

Yes some will hoard it in case they need it, then return it later so check the dates before you buy.

DEF deletes and DPF deletes are just too radical for my taste. Not easily reversible either.

I would rather use DEF and cut down on smog. My son has asthma.
A simulator exists and has been approved by the EPA for temporary use until the backlog of DEF replacement heads has been eliminated and all diesel vehicles have been retro-fitted.

It is my understanding from information sent by Cummins that the EPA approved temporary measure is not a simulator. Instead it is an ECM programming change that can only be made by a Cummins-approved service provider. The little kits with a micro processor and some connections is not the same, and I haven’t heard anyone say it is an approved alternative. It works for some types of rigs though,

I was warned years ago about DEF returns filled with water at WM. Their return policy may have changed. BUT I always check the seals on the bottle.

I have visited 3 establishments in the past week and all of them had DEF. Lots of DEF on their shelves. Is there a DEF shortage?

There is a worldwide urea shortage. Almost all urea is used as a nitrogen fertilizer. A small amount is diverted for use in DEF. I don't think the urea shortage will manifest itself as a DEF shortage. If it comes down to who has the highest priority, farmers or truckers, the truckers will probably win.

There hasn't been any shortage at the pumps in truck stops.

I see you have a 2004 gasser. Back than the diesels did not require def. Do you would have no fear to move to a diesel.

This DEF shortage claim has been going on for months, nothing. Started so people have urea to go with their 400 rolls of toilet paper they have stocked up.

No DEF shortage in Iowa off I 80. Stopped at a Kum & Go Truck stop for $5.29 diesel - 26 cent for Sam’s MasterCard = $5.03, I think will be the cheapest on the way to Yellowstone.
The T/A was $5.19 with the TSD card.
Once you cross the Missouri River Diesel goes up quite a bit.

The DEF was $3.38 a gallon, filled up.
In Ohio on I 80 it was $4.99
In Indiana it was $4.40
