Dometic Awnings Weather Shield

I had to replace the awning fabric on my motorhome today. It's a Dometic/A&E awning with the Weather-Guard aluminum shield. Despite the shield, the sun still managed to destroy the fabric in the few inches of cloth that are exposed where the fabric slides into the track on the side of the motorhome. Makes me wonder what the point of the shield is? You still have to replace the whole fabric no matter where it rips. Or was my shield not previously installed correctly?

In any case, we did away with the shield this time around as the new fabric they sent me was meant for use without a shield.

How long did you wait for the fabric? I have a burn hole in mine from some errant fireworks. Ordered from Dometic Jan 24. Still waiting for it to me made.

As for your weather sheild, I had a similar awning without the weather sheild on it on my previous coach. Three times it was damaged by hail WHILE CLOSED. The weather sheild covers impact from above, but yes, road wear and tear and sun can sneak up from the underside while exposed.

I have been waiting on Tweed colored replacement awning fabric for 10 months now.

Mine is a Sun Wave brand, bought off Ebay for $118 (17' awning). Made in China, of course. Quality seems good and it fit perfectly other than having to remove the Weather Shield. Also, fabric is heavy vinyl while the original appeared to be polyester cloth. I paid $295 for a local mobile RV mechanic to install it. Would have done it myself if I had a helper but it was not an unreasonable price. Took two guys 1.5 hours. Color is a tan blend that gets lighter in color towards the top.
