Dometic NDR1292 Demise

Well it looks like my NDR1292 just died. The refer no longer cools at all and yet the 110v and propane heaters appear to be working. I've even bypassed the controls and hooked up 110v directly to the heating elements but still no cooling effect what so ever. So my conclusion is that the cooling unit is dead.
If there are any other tests I should perform or my conclusion is not sound, I'd like to hear about it since my next step is to shop for a replacement refer or at least a cooling unit.

Any sign of a yellowish powder at the base of the chimney ( base of the burner tube ) it's not just Norcolds that develop leaks .

I've helped replace two Dometic fridges with leaks.

Wiring the heater element(s) DIRECTLY to 120VAC and running for 12 hrs will prove if cooling unit is capable of function

Freezer/food compartment NOT cooling with element directly wired.......Cooling Unit is SHOT

No other testing required

2003 RV........17 yrs of service. Got your monies worth

No yellowish indications or any indications of leaks. So not complaining about the 17 years, as you say it was a good run.

Are there any units with similar footprints to the NDR1292 which is no longer available. I'd like to minimize the demo. Thanks

That's an option but I'm not opposed to a complete change out if the dimensions allow for it. Right now the 4 inch height difference is a problem due to electrical and circuit panel placement. So I may be better just changing out the cooling unit. Thanks.

Mine failed 3 years ago. Replaced it with a Samsung residential. In retrospect, wish it had failed years earlier. Best upgrade ever!

I have the same fridge and when mine decides to check out, my plan is to swap out the cooling unit with a compressor unit from JC Refrigeration.

If you have a PSW inverter, you can install a Magic Chef MCBM920S1 and a side door to make it a slim cabinet. I did this 4 years ago, it has been performing great. No wood work it right slid in. I had the same 1292.

So that's another thing... The inverter is MSW. Just ordered a replacement cooling unit and hope to see it this week. We're currently parked with friends so it's fairly painless but hope to get it fixed soon. I'll see how easy it is and post.

Well this is a short update on what is appearing to be a continuing drama.

I ordered a replacement cooling unit and with one day demo and one day install I have the frig back installed. Everything has been working well except at T+6 hours I smelt ammonia. So now I'm three weeks with the new cooling unit and there is a consistent ammonia smell which I'm sure is fatal to the unit.

I've contacted the supplier and they will honor the warranty but I may have to go through another replacement exercise. (But at least it will be quicker this time.)

Stay tuned.

Do not use fridge
Remove outside access panel(s)
Use a FAN to blow air into lower access and evacuate the ammonia....corrosive/toxic

Who did you get replacement cooling unit from????
