EGR Cooler

08 Phaeton purchased in 18
What could be a long post I will try to make short. First long trip after purchase rig overheated near Crecent City, let cool drove over Trinity Pass to Redding, CE light on code indicated exhaust aftertreatment. Took it into Redding Freightliner, they replaced two exhaust gaskets and exhaust manifold. Check engine and limp mode and then tow into Cummins Riverside Ca. They found turbo was not bolted back on by Freightliner among other things. Fixed and drove to Tucson. Drove home to Wa. no problems. Fast forward to 2020 long trip to Utah, overheating on hills cooled down by rpms. Twin Falls overheating and stop engine. Currently in Twin Falls Freightliner and they have diagnosed an EGR cooler cracked. My question is: Am I chasing symptoms or could this be the original cause of overheating? Can an EGR cooler cause overheating over a long period of time? I have used Dawn on both sides the radiator/CAC and watched the bubbles. Are there things I should have checked while its torn down? Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance. Stuck in Twin Falls...

Do a google search of cracked egr symptoms. That should answer your question.
I also suggest you clean your radiator/ CAC with aluminum friendly Simple green. Dawn I don’t think, will clean any accumulated grease or oil as well.

Engine overheating is the first sign
Loss of power or acceleration is often noted as well

Not a good thing but common on older and some newer units
Long idle times can be problematic
