EMS/Surge Protection for Class B+
Hi everyone, wanted to know the best surge or EMS protection unit I should purchase. I have a 30 amp system Class B+ gas motor home. New unit and want to protect it the best way. I have read about Progressive Indust, Harvard, Camco. Just wanted some advice from those who have been out in the field, so to speak. Thanks everyone.

I personally like the progressive industries. They make a hardwired (EMS-HW30C) on or you can get a portable one (PT30X). They offer a lifetime warranty.

I'm happy with my Hughes Power Watchdog, which is also available in both portable and hardwired versions as well as 30A and 50A models. As I mentioned on another thread recently, if you buy one don't buy it from Amazon as they sent me the wrong model TWICE, and from the Amazon customer reviews it's been an ongoing problem.

We have a Progressive Industries 50A hardwired unit that works great for us. It's saved us several times at campgrounds with low voltage.

Surge protectors are typically purchased for large motor homes with lots of electronic components, like entertainment systems, multiplex lighting and system controllers, etc. Your Class B has some of those things, but very few. You also will have little room to install a hardwired unit. In your situation, I would just buy a portable model that connects to the power cord and plugs directly into the shore power.
We have a built-in system, but to protect my cord, transfer switch and the main surge protector, I use a SurgeGuard portable at the power pole. I don't think you need anything real exotic. I would suggest this one on Amazon, only $76.00.
