Before a concert, I always look at at an Ariel view of the fairgrounds and a few years ago I knew the one way to the stage was narrow and it had rained. The fair board member at the gate said we would be fine in our 45’ bus. As I rounded the last corner, the gravel turned to grass and then we just sank. I knew we would need a four wheel drive tractor and just shook my head as I watched several two wheel drive tractors not budge our 25 tons.
After two, two wheel drive tractors hooked on at the same time would not move it, the fair board said they had it figured out. By this time a few hundred people had lined the scene as an early 1900’s steam tractor came to the rescue. So now our Prevost was connected to a steam tractor nearly 100 years older than our coach: no go after all the excitement. Finally a local farmer showed up with a tractor with tracks and pulled us to the stage. After the concert, the police had to escort us right through the midway to get out. This was not our tightest route as we have had many of those, but it turned out to be a unique story that I doubt others have experienced.
