Extend a stay propane kit

Hello folks I have a 2015 class C last summer I installed a extend a stay propane kit. Because I use my unit in the winter as well I live in the north east so it's been cold where I am and I used up the house propane tank. So I went outside turned off the house propane knob and then opened the knob on the new tank the heat seemed to come on and ran for a bit but then late at night my unit got cold the furnace never turned on I figured my batteries were low they were not am I doing something wrong thank you for your help.

How cold was it, Propane can be problematical at low temps.

Cooktop burners still work?

If you try the furnace again, does it again run for a while and then stop again.

Guess it could also be excessive moisture in the portable tank that is icing up the regulator.

Could try pouring reasonably warm water over the regulator and see if the propane flow improves.

One of the problems with propane is . It is not always propane.

Was watching a TV re-run (Mr. ED) and the coronal's wife called it a BUTANE tank,, Two or 3 times..
What is the difference... The boiling point (Vapor temp) Propane is a vapor (Gas) almost all the way down to -40 (-30-something like 39 as I recall) Butane.. Closer to freezig (32F or 0C) .

S0. Why do I type this: Some dealers will fill you up with the lower cost BUTANE but charge for PROPANE thus generating maximum fraudlent profit.

I don't think it's a problem with the propane freezing I had the house tank refilled and that is working I am only having a problem with the extend a stay and the extra tank

The external extend-a-stay portable tank has less surface area to for propane to boil off of than your main tank. As temperatures drops you need a larger and larger surface area to boil off enough propane to meet the relatively high flow requirements of your furnace. Also as propane boils off it cools the tank (this is why a BBQ propane tank may ice up on the outside on a summer day if used with a high flow burner, you can also see this happen with most small 1 pound disposable propane tanks) , the smaller the tank is the harder it is for it to dissipate this cold, if it is too small or it is too cold outside the propane then freezes up. (this is the same gas law theory as air conditioners use to work)

This sort of problem is seen fairly often when people install home standby generators using under-sized propane tanks in colder climates, everything worked fine in the summer when it was installed, but wait for that record cold winter night and a power outage. Then the generator starts up and after a few minutes will not maintain a load and dies, as the propane tank freezes up but will restart and run again after an hour or so after the tank thaws enough to boil off another burst of propane, repeat.....

OP did not state how large a slave tank he had so icing may not be problematic. I have a 120 gal tank alongside.

Put a thermometer on one of the heat outlets and let the furnace run 5-10 minutes. What is the measured temperature?
