Fan-Tastic Vent Cover Install Opinions

I installed my vent cover and now that I'm sitting here thinking about it I don't know if I should redo it. Being that my vent fan had tons of self leveling lap seal around the seams and that the vent cover did not bolt on (it uses cotter pins to secure it) I figured that it should be installed on top of the lap seal since it uses cotter pins for easy removal. I removed the lap seal where the four brackets go and then sealed them with lap seal then installed the cover on top of that.

Now I'm wondering if I should have removed all of the original lap seal, install the cover, and then reseal the cover's seam.

How have you guys done yours?

Exactly the way you describe, cleaned the old sealant to insure bonding , removed only what was necessary, attached the brackets, and sealed over top. If the original sealant had no signs of cracking , no need to replace it.

It sounds like you have it installed correctly. I did mine that way last year and haven't had any leaks.

Sounds like it already done and done. If you want to add some caulking around the screw holes that you put into the side of the fan cover. I installed mine on my unit and they don't actually sit all the way down on the roof.
