Fiberglass roof oxidation / streaking

I have a 2011 American coach with a fiberglass roof. Getting tired of the white streaking coming down the sides from the oxidized roof.

What is the best stuff to use to re-coat or seal up there to avoid this?

My detailer is recommending Henry's 100% silicone tropi-cool. Thought I would check here first.

Frequent washing keeps the streaks away, and application of a floor wax to the roof will keep it away for 2-3 months at a stretch. The longer term fix is to re-paint the roof, which actually isn't difficult if you are OK with getting up there. I re-did mine (2004 Tradition) with Dicor Fiberglass Roof Coat, but a quality marine deck paint is just as good. I washed mine down, wiped it with liquid sandpaper to remove the surface oxidation, and then brushed on two coats of the Roof Coat. No need to remove a/c or anything either. Took me about 6 hours, including drying time between coats.


I see no reason to use Henry's Tropi-cool on it - there is no need to seal the fiberglass like there would be if it was EPDM. But yes, you could use that if you want.

Give it a good cleaning and rub down with 303.

I used this last year when I painted my roof, so far so good, not sure how long it will last but longer then washing and waxing and wasn't that hard to apply. Cleaned the roof good using a pressure washer and a round rotary head, this mad quick work of it. Did a light sanding. Taped off the area I wanted to paint. Used a smaller foam roller and small paint brush, probably 1 hour to paint. Let dry overnight and did a second coat.

I did two coats with Topside three years ago before taking off to full time. It's held up quite well, but this coming summer I'm considering a refresh coat. It's seen a lot of weather and it's lost some of it's shine. One of the main reasons I went with it is because my almost 25 year old Filon (fiberglass) roof was showing some surface crazing and the paint filled it in very nicely. Still cleans up very nicely.

Purchase some 3M J channel and run it down the entire length of the coach. This will prevent what's on the roof from running down the side and channel it to the front and/or rear.

Wash & wax. Mop & Glow is as good as anything else you can use.

empire123- as you said, the coating is oxidizing. that is a normal process for paint. wash your roof and use a somewhat stiff brush to remove the chalking, rinse and apply two coats of rustoleum topside paint. ours held up for about 5 years . this year i applied one more coat. no more white streaks.

Not intending to hijack the thread....

Whenever I see the name Mop and Glow, it brings back not so pleasant memories of times in my 20s when I used to have a cleaning business. Back then, Mop and Glow was a very popular product. When I used to go to give an estimate on stripping and rewaxing a floor, I dreaded hearing the home owner had used it. Even with strong solution of ammonia, commercial stripper and a scrubber, those were hellish jobs, and I eventually stopped giving flat fee estimates, and instead charged by the hour. It had to be taken off layer by layer. I remember one slate floor so thick with the stuff there was almost no texture left to the stone. I think I ended up making about $2hr on that job, although the customer was amazed at how nice the floor looked when I was done.

FYI: One issue with any indoor floor finish is they will eventually yellow.

If you are going to use a floor finish, I would recommend a commercial wax available at your local janitorial supply store. High solids, durable, and easier to remove when needed.

I would use Poli Glow thats what I did on my 24 year old roof about a year ago. Still shines like new.

I used a Dicor product for this specific purpose. Dicor fiberglass roof coating. So far has held up & worked well.
