I thought I would make a new thread for this to make it easier to find. Monaco Mama asked about the forward looking camera install.
After I installed my 7" LCD monitor on the dash to display my VMSpc engine monitoring software that runs on my laptop, I had a few extra ports left on the 7" monitor.
The wife runs her GPS software on the laptop, and I use the second VGA port to run the 7" monitor. This way I get my own screen.
One of the connections on the 7" monitor was for a video plug (RCA plug). I contacted Tim at RV Cams and asked him what he had available. I bought a small waterproof Infared color camera in an aluminum casing. The camera also came with the video hook up cable and mounting bracket for the camera.
I mounted it on the front cap, just forward of the FM radio antenna. That was when I learned how the facia came off my front TV. The cable runs through the front TV cabinet area, and down the drivers side inside window post in back of the cover. The infared lights surround the lens in the center of the bullet, and glows red at night. It looks kinda cool.....
Now when I get into a close situation with the MH in a campground or the like, I hit the source button on the monitor and it flips to the camera.
The flash made a glare on the screen, but the picture is crystal clear on both the forward looking camera and the VMS display.
I later marked the sides of the monitor with label tape that indicte the height of the sides of the MH, and the height of the tallest part of the MH (the Fantastic Fan vent cover). Now I can estimate if an overhang is just a little too close to safely drive under, or a branch too low to navigate around. I have only ever damaged an RV by hitting an overhead obstruction that I just didn't see, or misjudged. An expensive mistake. I'll stop and crawl up on the roof and look first before I tear a hole in another roof.........
