Fresh Water Tank is Slowly Filling

My fresh water tank is filling even though I am hooked to city water. It takes about 3 days for the tank to steadily fill. The tank valve is in the “normal operations” position (NOT the “fill” position). Any reason why the tank would fill? I had a new water pump installed recently, but it is off when I’m on city water, so I can’t imagine it’s anything to do with the new pump. I have a 2015 Itasca Sunova 33C. Thanks!

There are 2 check valves in the fresh water line - one to block city water from filling the freshwater tank when the FW fill valve is closed, and the other to block pumped water from the fresh water tank from spilling out the city water fill port.

It sounds like the one that blocks city water from filling the fresh water tank has a some trash in it. That valve is located before, after, or in the water pump and can be cleaned or replaced altogether.

It is the diaphragm inside your water pump that is permitting water to back flow into your water tank.

Temporary fix is to install a check valve before your strainer (see photo) until you change the diaphragm or replace the pump.

Replacing the pump altogether is the easiest solution.Click image for larger version

I had a similar problem a few months ago, the problem was worn out guts in the fill valve that was letting water leak by even when it was in the city water position.

Yes, it could also be the Tank Fill/Fresh Water diverter valve, but usually on much older coaches where over time, corrosion and/or a lack of exercising the valve can cause internal failure.

So, check that valve by repeatedly opening and closing and listen to hear if it is diverting water to the tank when in the "fill" position.

Thank you, everybody, for responding. I’ll get to work on some of these and see how it works out.

I'm putting my money on these answers and especially if the OP doesn't have water softener. Running city water all the time without a softener, calcium buildup from hard water will build up on the valve and not allow it to seat properly. I do have a water softener and even my Tank Fill/Fresh Water diverter valve went south after 10yrs. Had to replace it to solve the problem.

Not having a water softener can and will cause all kinds of plumbing problems as the RV ages. Water heater, ice maker, shower & faucets, valves, plumbing lines, water pump and the list goes on.

Testing it like this usually won't work because the leak is so slow. It's not something you can hear or feel. The valve is not seating properly and slowly leaking by.

First, is your pressure REGULATOR installed ON HOSE? Many forget, but say problem cured after reg installed. IF INSTALLED ALREADY, do you have a spare you can install to see if result different? Water PUMP has CHECK VALVE internal that is usual culprit, but may have trash? Turn off city water , open faucet and run pump for a 30-seconds to clear trash? If your rig has the selector valve, valve = possible culprit... may need repair. Good luck

My exact issue of this was solved by using a pressure regulator.

Any chance you have the Anderson Valve Kantleak (AKA Willeak)?

The fill/normal operations diverter valve needed to be replaced. That fixed the problem of the fresh water tank mysteriously filling on its own. Thanks everybody for your insights and suggestions!

When mine did the same thing, I shut off city water and ran some water using the water pump. It cleared whatever piece of crud was in the check valve and it's been fine ever since. Cheap fix, if it works. If not, need new water pump or add another check valve, like Toribk said.

Some say installing water pressure regulator cured, (newbies, who did not know). Some who ran pump say running cleared check valve and cured issue. Some had to replace pump.
