Hi,

What width do folks recommend for a MH and Toad sitting side by side? And for a MH by itself?

Mine is 30'x50' one side in coach entrance the other side is the toad entrance. It has 16' ceiling, this allows all slides and awnings to open up.

Might be interesting to see a picture, if you are comfortable with that.

I would definitely want to be able to open all the slides while in the garage, especially of there was an issue accessing points of the vehicle with the slides closed. I know that is not normally an issue for MH, but is for travel trailers.

Mine is 20' wide, which is wide enough to keep the slides out and still walk around/maintain the RV freely. No room to exercise the awnings or add shelves on the sides to store anything though. If I had to build it again, I'd go wider.

It really depends on access, and utilization of floor space. I store our 28 ft (29'5" bumper to bumper) coach in a divided 40x60 metal shed, where the bay measures 39 long by 30 wide (well 29 wide), with the 12x12 roll up door positioned off center about 4 ft from the partition wall. With this setup I store our small cheap TOAD in the corner at the front of the coach on wheel skates, this lets me use much of the other extra space down the left side of the coach for other storage (I have a set of warehouse pallet racks there with pallets on them). The point I am getting at is that wheel skates can really help storing a small car in limited floor space.

I really would not want a space less than about 18-20 ft wide to allow access to cargo compartments while in the shed, and not less than 4-5 feet longer than the coach front and back to give access to get under the hood, etc.

Same here, 20' wide, room to put the slides out. I put the MH in at a bit of an angle and put shelves on the side away from the rear end that is close on one side...although it's still easy to walk around.

I agree 20’ for the coach. I have 24’ now, but could live with 20. So if you allow 12’ for the toad you could get away with 32’ trusses which are fairly standard. 16’ plate height is a good idea to give plenty of room for door hardware.

20 years ago I built a shop that was 54’x60’ lantern barn style with 20’ in the center 14’ high (roll up doors in cans, not overhead), and 17’ on each side, 20x60’ room above with balconies each end. On one side it had an office and two mini-shops each 17x20 (and a bathroom), the other side was 17x60 for vehicles. Worked out well for everything.

Our house came with an RV garage attached and, it's 16' wide and 53' long. There are newer homes being built here with TRIPLE RV garage's attached. What I wouldn't give for one of those! The answer I would give to the OP would simple, build as big and long as you can afford and are legally allowed to.

99.999999999999999% of the folks on RV forums that have built RV garages have all WISHED they'd have gone bigger when they had the chance to. Things change. Including RV's so, if you build an RV garage to be *adequate* for what you have now but, in a year or maybe 2 or 3 you come on a chance to step up to a larger one, but, IT WON'T FIT in your RV garage, and you HAD A CHANCE to make it larger when it was built, you're gonna wish you'd made that decision to go larger back then.

Then there's the matter of storage. If you want shelves for RV stuff or whatever, you have to have room for those. Yep, no doubt about it, make it as big as you can.

I agree with as big as you can, but more importantly at least a 14 ft tall door, preferably one that is over 12 ft wide. The roll up door on my shed is 12x12 which means I have less than 11 inches of clearance on each side of my mirrors if I am perfectly centered, this may seem like plenty until you are driving into a back lit space after dark after a long day of driving, or backing out dark and early in the morning.

The choice of purchasing my current coach was partly dictated by the size of the door on my shed, I had decided on a Safari Trek built between 2001-2006, but ended up getting a 2002 model because it was the last year that was short enough to fit through a 12 ft tall roll up door (It is 11'6", where the 2003 model went up to 12'1" or 12'3")

If 25' is the widest you can go you might consider going longer. You could fit you RV into one side, allowing 16' but this is bear minimum to be able to get around. You'd then only have 9' for a vehicle. Not the best

I built a 40' wide X 50' long garage. This was as large as I could fit on the area I had due to slope of the land. I still had to build a retaining wall on the back side and one on the front side and back fill to pour concrete.

I installed a 14X14' door, and since I have to back into the garage at an angle is the bear minimum I could get by with, it works but with practice I can usually get it backed in on the first try.

I dedicated a 16' wide section for my motorhome. It does give me enough space to walk around with the drivers side slides out but it would be tight if I had a quad slide, doable but tight.

If possible I'd also recommend having full hookups in the building. I have a 50 amp hookup, water and sewer. Coming back from a trip and being able to dump and hookup to power lets me take my time unpacking.

The rest of my garage I built a workshop and use the roof of this for storage. I also have enough room to park my boat on one side. Everything worked out pretty good but as usually, if I could have built the garage bigger, it would have been better!!

Folks,

I had a think about what would any potential buyer of the house want to out of to the building and the answer is a glad to truck and a 32-25 ft TT or 5th wheel.

I plan to park a 32ft Super C and a Jeep JKU in it.
