Generac Gen issue

On my generac gen, been having issues when underload of with slow down and up and black smoke., just not able to keep up with load.

Think it might be dirty fuel filter, but any other pointers would be plus.

I would do a complete service; all filters, new fuel and plugs and then see if it still gives a problem. You did not say how many hours are on the genset and if you have been running it regularly; not allowing fuel to go bad in the carburetor.
