Generator hard to start

Needed to start my generator this afternoon, but wouldn't start. Started the engine on the coach and the generator fired right up. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so need some advice from "the been there's ".

Going to need more info.

Was the gen set turning over at all ? Turning over but too slowly to start?
Was the coach on shore power or in storage ?
Does the gen set start from the coach batteries , or the chassis batteries ?

Because, if you coach is like mine ; gen set starts from the coach batteries; and their state of charge was too low to start the gen set, then starting the coach would supply full chassis battery and alternator power to start the gen set, through the coaches all battery charging system.

Sorry Skip426 for the lack of info. Here is the scenario as it happened. While connected to shore power, my wife and I were out for a couple of hours. When we returned, realized that the power was off in the neighborhood. Started to crank the generator, but it would not turn over fast enough. Started the coach, let it warm up a bit, then started the generator. I did not think to check voltage before doing all this, but subsequently checked and all the batteries appear to be charging okay while on shore power. Admittedly, I do not know the birth date of any of the batteries as they do not have the date purchased punched out on the labels. They are AGM batteries. Thanks for the help!

If the battery power dropped off that quickly; approx 2 hours ; , JMHO: time to take them and have them load tested. One bad cell can cause an issue .
Testing with a voltmeter will only give you an indication of the batteries " surface charge" you need a load test to get an indication of the power available, from the battery.

I purchased my own load tester from Harbor Freight , got it for approx $20 on sale .

OK let's NOT jump straight to getting new batteries. First how long was the power off? What all did you have on in the MH? Does your have a commercial (residential) fridge? Is there than one inverter and were they on? Now you can think, How old are the batteries? Do you have an "Auto Gen Start"? Was it setup and turned on? If so why didn't it start the generator automatically?
When was the last time you did maintenance on the batteries?
Are the low on water, are the connections corroded? Are they tight? Answer these things to determine your next course of action. and let us know the outcome please?
