Generator has no preheat

We have an Onan Model HDKAJ11451H 7.5 diesel generator with 438 hours in our "new to us" Fleetwood. It has code 36.

It has no preheat. I have tried it in weather from 8 degrees to 60 and it goes straight to starter.

I went ahead and replaced the fuel filter. I hope to take it out this weekend (no slide) and fix it or take it to someone. I plan to start at the temp. sensor and hope that is the problem unless someone here knows a better plan of attack.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you push on the opposite side of the generator switch and make it move? Some coaches have a 2 position switch one being the pre heat and then the other start/run. You push one side of the switch to heat and then the other to start

Pushing the stop side of the switch will prime it after changing filter or running out of fuel.

pushing the stop side not only primes but also pre-heats (glow plugs).

You must have a completely different year/model of Onan than my 7.5QD. I just checked in the service manual and, in the instructions for starting and stopping, there is no mention that, pushing on the stop side of the start/stop toggle, operates the glow plugs too. It does say that pushing ONLY on the start side, will:

1. Engage the glow plugs, based on temp of the engine
2. Energizes the fuel pump
3. Flashes the LED indicator lamp in the start/stop switch
4. Energizes the governor/actuator to "full rack" position
5. Energized the starter, WHEN the pre-heat is completed

The colder the engine is, the longer the need to push on the start side of that switch, in order for the glow plugs to full-fill the time requirement in pre-heat. There is a schedule of how long the pre-heat is.

Coolant temp > 120 degrees, 0 seconds
Coolant temp 50 degrees, 5 seconds
Coolant temp 23 degrees, 10 seconds
Coolant temp less than -4 degrees, 15 seconds

The service manual does say that, to PRIME the engine, (normally after a fuel filter change only) Press and Hold the STOP side of the start/stop switch.

scott,
i have a powertech cd8000 model. i just checked the manual, i think it means 8 seconds preheating (at stop side) and cease when engine starts cranking cycle. one should press the start side for only 1 second.

Aaaaaahhhha, I see now. We're talking apples and oranges here. Two completely different Generators and control systems. I thank you for getting back here with an explanation.

Dropped unit form MH, not very complicated. Our Fleetwood has a generator panel in front which I removed and used an ATV jack. Went quick

Used PB Blaster on temp. sensor and was very careful. Sensor broke anyway. I read a lot and many people never post results to their problems so I will update when I solve my problems and maybe it will help someone.

Success.

I used CRC Freeze out and after several attempts I was able to ease it out.

I was amazed at the amount of crystals and build up in the system.

I flushed the system and replaced the thermostat as well.

Well Sir,
Sounds like you're on the right track. While it may have taken you a bit of a shorter time to get your sensor out, I utilized the same exact method a couple of years ago. Mine was seriously corroded in there. I did a huge write-up on just what was involved. Many folks have used mine as an example of the procedure for R & R of that temp sensor. And, as you've noticed, regardless of how good of maintenance is done in keeping that cooling system clean on that little engine, you still get corrosion built up around the business end of that sensor.

That's the primary cause of it being so hard to get out. Anyway, glad you're making progress. These things can be a bear.

Outstanding write-up!

I wish there was a way to keep the sensor out of the liquid like a "dry well" or a strap-on bulb but I guess it is what it is.

Did this cure the no preheat problem? Have you checked the fuses, 3 of them behind the driver side front access panel?
