Heating the water hose

A question for those of you who are more experienced than I at camping in cold weather. I figure I'll fill my 75 gal water tank about 1/2 full as I usually do for emergency usage. I am wondering if anyone has used heat tape from Lowes or Home Depot on your water hose coming into the coach to protect it from freezing? I noticed on the heat tape package I looked at at Lowes and Home Depot, the instructions said NOT to use it on hoses. Is it just too hot for a vinyl hose? Or, do you use the expensive heated water hoses?

Heat tape can be purchased in different wattages....4,6,8 and probably others. I'm not sure what the Lowes/Home Depot has, but if I were going to try to use heat tape to install on an existing hose, I would try and find out what the wattage is on the one at Lowes/Home Depot and purchase a lesser wattage heat tape.

Heated water hose for me. Designed for the task and factory thermostatic control. We winter (full-time living in the coach) at 7000' elevation. Do it right.

Have used a cube cooler with the bottom cut out over a water supply to protect it. Works pretty well and just use the lid to check on things.

I used a heat tape once on a piece of garden hose, and it melted the hose. Buy a heated hose from a RV supplier. Eddie Elk.

I have found heated hoses to be expensive and frequently fail. Expensive lesson. Have gone to heat tape on hose and have been quite successful.

One of these is what we've been using and works for us thus far.

Last year I was 200 feet of hose from a water hydrant, too long to insulate and use heat tape. So I used my tank all winter. Refilled about once per week, and walked the hose to drain it each time so it would not be plugged frozen next time I needed it.

I would do laundry and take a long shower on tank fill day while it was still hooked up.

Never had an issue and always had plenty of water.

what I do is this. I fill my on board tank (80 gallons and in a heated bay) then disconnect and drain the park hose so it does not freeze. No problems.

IN facrt: Solution to another problem butr that's park specific.

I also fill the tank and drain all the hoses (water & sewer) Also if I think it will get real cold I put everything inside.
