Help Please! Only getting 40 gal. from 100 gal. tank

1993 Georgie boy on F53 chassis with 460 Ford injected gasoline engine. Have made only one trip of 280 miles out and 280 back. Yes I did a tune up in the middle. Only 55K miles on the clock. Love the new(to us) coach but this dog won't hunt!

The gas tank is 100 gal. I fill up, run 38-40 gal out and start to get coughing and lean backfire on hills. Put 10 gallons in and it runs up hills like a billy goat. ........until that 10 is gone. Put in 5 gallons, same story. I'm hauling around 60 gallons I cannot use. It appears the gas line connections are at the front of a 5 foot long tank.

Has anyone dropped this gas tank? Where is the fuel pump located along the length of the tank? The fuel gauge is pegged at "full". It occasionally will drop and read but gets stuck when I fill most times.

Sender and fuel pump are usually all one package. Any idea what pump/sender unit I should buy?

Thanks in advance

…...probably varies from rig to rig but many fuel tanks use an internal pick-up tube to draw fuel up without sucking stuff off the bottom of the tank.....in your case, the tube could have broken off short or has a hole in it so at some point, air is being sucked up rather than fuel....depending on tank location, determining the cause wont be easy...

Yup, if the filter doesn't solve the problem then the tank has to be dropped to check the pick-up tube.

…..Curious--if engine runs great above what appears to be a certain fuel level in the tank, why would a new fuel pump or filter fix this problem?

Not that it helps, but a 1993 ought to be a 75 gallon tank, not 100.

I'd definitely be getting under it with a tape measure though, just to be sure. (The 75 gallon tank has about a 100 gallon total volume including vapor space).

F-53 Fuel Pump Change Pictures

There were some slightly older Georgie Boys built on the E33 chassis. I think those has smaller tanks. Don't think they were around in '93 though. They were like 28' long, how long is yours?

Possibly someone replaced with wrong pump assembly. Or cheap aftermarket that's been adapted and has some pick up tube on it The pump is at and draws from the bottom. It's spring loaded and should hit the bottom of tank and still compress springs. It should pop up when you remove ring or have to push down to install. If you have never been able to draw much fuel ,so you can't really judge fuel gauge well.
Delphi makes a replacement for it is half the price of Motorcraft just as good or a bit better. Wish Motorcraft made. pumps for my GMs over the years half the price.

Because fuel pump/ pickup TUBE bad or wrong; (One owner found wrong pump with wrong tubing only supplied fuel to his GEN when main engine running, LOL :-( You never know what POs/ bad dealers/mechs did, until you pull it...

I'm not familiar with your coach, so I may be full of it....

But...

On mall the RVs I've worked on there are two pickup tubes on the tank... the engine pickup feeds off the bottom (or close to it), and the genny pickup feed at about the 2/3 to 3/4 level. The idea of two tubes is that the genny won't run you so low in fuel that you are stranded.... the genny will suck air and stop and you can still start the RV and get to a refill location.

If your tank has ever been dropped for service the feed hoses could have been swapped.

Help Please! Only getting 40 gal. from 100 gal. tank

Couldn’t be simply swapped. If the lines were swapped, there’d be no fuel pump for the engine.
That said, that may be exactly what happened. In tank pump died, which is common, PO hooked up a new inline pump to the generator pickup. An added inline pump should be easy to locate if that is the case.

Yep. Look for an external pump. It sounds like the engine is hooked to the generator pick up tube.

The pre-1997 Ford fuel pumps were notorious for failures like that and Ford re-designed the pump in 1996. Yours may still have the original. If so, dropping the tank to replace the pump is in your future.
