How are your leveling legs held on?

I found that our leveling legs are only held on to the frame by some brackets and bolts. The bolts do not go through the frame and there are no welds, just bolted on brackets.

This concerned me and I wondered if anyone's leveling legs have come off.

I've never heard of a leveling leg falling off. All four (4) legs on my coach are bolted to the frame also.

Do you think welding is a better connection?

They have to be bolted or welded to the frame, they’re lifting thousands of pounds and hanging there between times. Got a decent picture?

FWIW - all the leveling legs I’ve seen are bolted on, usually 2 bolts on either side the cylinder through a mounting plate welded to the cylinder.

In normal use, the load on the assembly is vertical only - there shouldn’t be much lateral (in this case, horizontal) load.

Between the shear strength of the bolt, and the surface friction between welded wing plate on the cylinder and the frame that it’s mounted to - and assuming the bolts are properly torqued - the vertical applied load should and easily does hold the coach level.

Otherwise, you would be seeing a bunch of lop-sided coaches at all the RV parks.

AJMike,
It would be nice to know the make/model/year/chassis/engine of the coach you're talking about. Once that info is present, others that may have your same coach might be able to present info that might be pertinent to your scenario. And, as has been asked, we'd like to see pictures of your "leveling legs". Are they regular hydraulic jacks or are they screw jacks or what? Do you know the company that made them like maybe HWH or Power Gear or ?

My leveling jacks are bolted on solid.
Now the foot the connects to the leg is just bolted on with one bolt through the center pointing up.

Mine has brackets welded to the frame, then the cyl bolt to the brackets. Aint going no where.

You be surprised at the shear strength of bolts. A lot of your RVs frame/suspension is bolted on and still holding strong

there are some that are clamped on. approved by ford, sprinter and other class c rv’s.
these mfg’s dont allow welding, and some dont allow drilling holes in critical areas on the frame.
hwh does this on some small rv’s, and has never had a problem. winnebago approves them for use on the sprinter chassis.
mercedes also approves this method of attaching jacks.

My point was that the legs are bolted to the frame by brackets, but the bolts holding the brackets do not go through the frame, only around it, and they are not welded to the frame.

When the RV is moving they are constantly subject to vibration and if the bolts come loose during travel the brackets may not hold them securely.

My coach type and year is in my signature, and that should show up because I post using my computer and browser, not using a phone app. But just in case, it is a 2020 Regency Ultra Brougham which is a B+/C on a 2019 Sprinter 3500XD chassis.

The RV is currently in storage and I don't have pictures of the legs, but I will take some when I next go on a trip, which is in a couple of days. But they are regular EQ hydraulic leveling legs.

The issue is that they were just bolted on to the frame and the bolts and bracket went around the frame. No bolts go through the frame and they were not welded to the frame, so if the bolts come loose through vibration there is nothing to keep the brackets from twisting off of their location on the frame. When I spoke with EQ Systems about this I was told that the reason they are not welded to the frame or use bolts through the frame is that welding or drilling holes through the frame voids the frame warranty on the RV.

Yes. That is what EQ Systems told me was the reason my leveling legs are not welded on or bolted through the frame.

It sounds like they used a U-bolt wrapped around the frame - Properly torqued at installation, there are several forces at work, all of which insure the leveler remains secured to the chassis.
I’d be more worried about the lug nuts not being properly tightened than the leveler bolts - and if I were paranoid about them coming loose, I would find a torque wrench and retorque to factory spec.

Out of curiosity, are you having issues with them coming loose or is this just a what if question?
