How do I get this window handle on?

How in the #$*& do I get this window handle on?

Does the serrated rubber strip go on the glass edge first? Then push the black metal part over both of those?

Or does the serrated rubber strip go into the black metal slot first? When I do the rubber strip collapses inside and I can't get it over the glass edge.

The rubber doesn't appear to have any glue on its outside serrated edge nor inside on its inner edge.

What makes this stay on the edge of the glass? If I mess with it FOREVER I can sort of get everything installed on edge of the glass and then next time I open the window, it all just pops off of the glass edge into my hand again. If I put the rubber on the edge of the glass first and then start to push on the black metal handle the rubber in some places won't be equal on both side of the edge of the glass, it can twist and be a lot on one side of the edge of the glass but not the other side of the edge of the glass. And this is with clean window tracks with little resistance and drag. If they didn't use glue, should I? I'm perplexed by this.

It's hard to tell from what you're describing, but I would glue the rubber to the window so it's on there evenly and let it dry overnight. The ridges on the rubber are there to "grip" the metal flange. I would push it on the rubber and see if it stays when you operate the window. If it doesn't, I would add glue to the exposed rubber and press the handle on. Again, let it dry overnight.

Your first assumption is correct. Rubber strip on glass, then metal pushed over the rubber. Tension holds the handle on the glass.

Like others say, original probably was just pushed on, soft rubber fingers held it when new, but age/ hardening rubber lost grip. I recommend masking tape and small tube of crystal clear LEXEL, set handle in place on glass and mask around it, both sides of glass, using handle as guide, then remove handle and apply thin film to glass, both sides, install rubber TO GLASS, then apply LEXEL to rubber both sides, and push handle into place. Vinyl or latex Gloves maybe advisable too. Remove tape after all in place and allow overnight to cure.
