How do you plug a generator fuel line?

I have to change my inline generator fuel filter and need to plug the fuel line while I get the new filter lined up.

I'll be on my back working in the little compartment which is too tight for my standard hose clamp pliers.

I can't seem to find some kind of hose plug.

What does everyone do?

I think I just stuck a screw or something in the line and clamped it.

I think Harbor Freight has clamps made for rubber hose lines.

A couple of tips, first, the golf tee will work great. Second, tie a shop rag around both wrists. Any fuel dripping will be caught by the rags. Third.....NEVER use an old style trouble light with an incandescent bulb. I responded/investigated two accidents where someone used an incandescent bulb while working under a car with gasoline. One died from his burns and the other had serious burns, that hospitalized him.

Lastly, if you're talking about changing the box style fuel filter on the Onan generator, make sure you use a fuel line wrench, or you'll round the corners of the fuel line nut.

Golf Tees might work; probably 1/4 or 5/16 fuel line? As a young mechanic, I kept an old exhaust valve that I had ground a slight taper on the stem for easier insertion, (BUT) suspect GEN fuel line likely to NOT leak, and fuel may even flow back to the tank? (e.g. tank pickup tube design?)

I have a small pair of vice grips that are like needle nose. I pinch those on the fuel line to pinch it closed.

Thanks for all the ideas.

I am going to try the golf tee. If that doesn't work I'll try those clamps from Amazon.

I have used Vice Grips but I wrap a few turns of electrical tape around the hose before clamping the hose off so I don't chaff or cut into the hose.

Just use the right size spare bolt. The threads act like a barb keep the bolt in place.
