Most state parks hand you a paper tag that you place on the site post, it includes your length of stay and departure date. The padlock idea is good though.

I wouldn't be concerned about private RV parks.

Mostly secure, IMO. I've never left a site open I occupied, but then never had a reason to. As others have posted, I have seen either traffic cones or camp chairs left on the the pad to indicate the site was reserved despite no RV being on it yet.

The only times I've had issues was in state parks with walk-in sites. I've had to have park rangers evict squatters off my reserved site when I've arrived to find my site occupied. One was so bold as to use a Sharpie to alter the date on the tag left behind by the prior occupant to make it appear THEY had the site reserved. The nerve of some people! Once shown my reservation confirmation, the ranger quickly ousted the squatter.

We came back from a day of adventuring to find 2 tents pitched on our site with our 5th wheel still there.

'Squatters' have no qualms about encroaching

To avoid the problem we made a simple folding A frame sign that said “Site occupied”. It stored easily in our cabover when traveling.

If you remember the child's trike called 'Big Wheels'? Going fast or slow, they make lots (and lots) of noise, especially on gravel.
Get one at a garage sale and leave it locked at the site entrance.
Saves your spot, and newcomers try to get far, far away from your site.

Since my RV's have always been left at the site while we're off exploring we haven't had the issue.

That said, I saw it happen once. A German couple touring the U.S. in a rented class B had a site across from us. Late afternoon a camper showed up and set up in the site. Later in the evening the German couple showed up and politely told the new occupants it was their site. The new people became belligerent. Great representatives of the U.S. to tourists from another country. I really felt bad.

The campground manager moved the German couple to another open site instead of making the belligerent ah0les move. It almost seemed like the manager knew them.

If I had a class B and vacating my site for the day, I'd have an "Occupied" sign to set out.

Long story cut way down.

When I was a grad teching assistant at a university I was having problems with student traffic messing with seedling being started on a lab cart in a sunny hallway. One day a put a radiation hazard sign on the cart and the troubles stopped. Almost. Turned out that day was when the fire inspected decided to do an annual inspection. He did not find the radiation sign very funny. I called into the Department Head's office asked as if there was any hazard material on that cart. I did get chuckle out of him, but he still asked that I remove the sign.

Not sure If I'd repeat that in a RV campground. A simple occupied sign should work if anything is going to.

Perhaps if the site was marked as occupied, or someone in a nearby site had told the new people (before they set up) that the site was already occupied by some nice foreign travelers the problem may have been averted.
I generally leave a 42 foot long, 40,000 pound object on the site when I’m gone for the day. Once came back to find a clothesline tied to my back ladder and to a tent behind it. The nice Eastern European couples in the tent were looking for shade while camping at the beach. They also drank their beer warm, so I figured they had enough issues. They were gone the next day.

Do not put a lock on the electric box. We have to do maintenance when we have power issues which could require us to get in the box. Remember you do not own the site or the electric service. I have had to cut many locks off of box's, sometime in a hurry. I would not want to be the person who caused me to drop 50 sites because someone locked a box that is one up in the series that needs work.
