Jayco Alante

We have a 2006 Four Winds, which we are considering trading in for a new Jayco Alante 31P. Our Class C is 10 years old, and we know that all of the systems are aging. We are planning on taking off in about a year after I retire. We have looked at the reviews on the Alante, and most of them are positive. Does anyone have anything that they can add about the coach. Also, I have noticed that some Class A's don't have mounted ladders. Do you carry a ladder with you, or should we insist on having a ladder installed before we sign on the dotted line? Thanks...

Pertaining to ladders, many RVs seem to be deleting them lately. Yes, in some cases they're an option.

Whether to insist they put a ladder on is a personal choice. One of the reasons, or so I'm told, that many manufacturers are choosing to forego the ladder is that they've determined that a great number of RVers either do not wish to go up on the roof or go up very infrequently. There's no storage space up there so it's not like you're needing to go up on the roof every trip. To perform maintenance up there, whether it be on the a/c, other items up there, or the roof itself for cleaning and inspection, again is not something one has to do every trip.

I do not see a ladder listed as an option for the Alante. Therefore, the dealer would have to do a custom fit ...or farm it out to have one custom done. If it was a factory option or a dealer-installed option, then the price would be relatively reasonable. If having to do an after-market installation, it may or may not cost quite a bit extra.

Most, including myself, would probably just opt to carry a collapsible ladder and store it in one of the storage compartments for use whenever needed to get up on the roof. I have a factory installed ladder that came standard on my rig but if it didn't come with one, I personally wouldn't make it a deal breaker. I do carry a folding step ladder that is almost 6' for other purposes since I do have a permanent ladder in the rear.

Here is one at Amazon that is popular with RVers:

Leapair 12.5ft Telescoping Ladder Aluminum Telescopic Extension Tall Multi Purpose

They're collapsible so take up very little space and are relatively lightweight yet can support someone over 300 lbs. They also come in other sizes and other manufacturers make them. Plus, you can also use them away from the RV if needed so it's not like a ladder that is permanently installed on the RV itself.

The Alante looks very nice, btw. It's nice looking and appears to have a very functional floor plan. *thumbs up*

I just bought an Alante 31v and don't see a need for carrying a ladder. I have a multi-fold extendable ladder at home that I use when I need to get on the roof. Getting a portable ladder will be much cheaper than having the dealer install one, if they are even willing to.

As for the Alante, I'm customizing/personalizing ours since we've only had it 2 weeks and winter is here now. We are very happy with it and expect to be thrilled once we take it out since we stepped up from a 15 yr old class c.

Enjoy your new mh!

Having spent a number of years in an RV...full and part time...I can assure you there will be times when you will need a ladder...but not necessarily to access the roof. If you ever experience an awning unfurling while going down the road, even a window or slideout awning....trust me, you will need a ladder. Been there...done that.

Yup, I agree. I urge all RVers to carry some type of ladder. You never know when you'll need it.

My foldable 6' step ladder comes in handy for even things like cleaning the windshield. I can whip it out while fueling or at a rest stop and quickly clean off the windshield and store it very efficiently.

I fully agree a ladder is useful for multiple things but one attached to the rear is only for getting on the roof, which is probably only needed once in a while when you're home, (unless you are a full timer).
