If you get the engine running let things alone for a half hour or so. That gives the engine alternator time to bring up the batteries. It is not instantaneous.

Same thing with the generator, if you start it let it run for at least an hour, 2-4 is better if you have a low battery situation. 15 minutes may not have put back the power you used to start it.
