Kidde recalls 37.8 million fire extinguishers
BOSTON, Mass. — Fire extinguisher manufacturer Kidde is recalling 37.8 million extinguishers in the United States and another 2.7 million in Canada because of problems with the plastic handles.

The recall covers 134 models manufactured between Jan. 1, 1973 and Aug. 15, 2017. It also includes models that were previously recalled in 2009 and 2015.

“The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency,” said a recall notice distributed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. “In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”

Recalled extinguishers were sold at retailers including Sears, The Home Depot, Walmart and Amazon.com. Some were also sold with commercial trucks, recreational vehicles and boats. Most cost between $12 and $50.

In one incident in 2014, the recall information said someone died when fire extinguishers failed to work following a car crash.

Approximately 391 failures have been reported, Kidde said. In addition to the one death, there are 16 reported injuries and 91 reports of property damage.

Customers are advised to contact Kidde for a replacement extinguisher. The company has set up a hotline at (855)271-0773, which is available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday. Customers can also contact the company online at Kidde.com.

Model numbers can be found on the fire extinguisher label and manufacturing dates are found in a 10-digit date code printed on the side of the cylinder, near the bottom.

All I can say is WOW. This is going to be a costly recall if in fact customers even see this recall and then actually contact the company for a replacement.

When we purchased our rig a year ago, one of the first things I did was throw away my 4 yr. old Kiddie OEM chemical fire extinguisher by the door, then replaced with 3 higher end Foam units throughout the coach.

When I read this part of the recall:
"The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency"
I mean yeah...at the age of these units this recall covers...ya think. I've always been taught that chemical extinguishers should not be mounted vertically because over time the chemicals—pack down—inside and will more than likely fail when needed. If you have no other option but to mount vertically, it's recommended that every 6 months or so, you remove the unit, turn it on it's side and bang it with a rubber mallet, piece of wood or something to break up the stuff inside. I've since mounted fire extinguishers horizontally and really stayed away from chemical units all together because if in fact they do put out a fire, the damage they do to surrounding areas is almost impossible to clean up and restore those areas/items to pre-fire condition.

Why type of fire extinguisher do you have?

The Kiddie extinguisher I bought in June is recalled. I called yesterday and they are sending me a new one with a box to return the recalled one.

NOTE: This list included in post #1 here is incomplete.
I found my MH extinguisher was NOT included in the US list but was on the Canadian list.

See This Thread Post #46 for both lists and how to get a Canadian FE replaced when shipped to a US address.

I also understand there is another list for smaller FE's used on PWC's but haven't seen the list yet.

Agreed. I copied and pasted the list from another site. However, neither of the 2 they are replacing of mine was on the list either. I think the best thing to do is call and give them the numbers.

Ours was recalled a couple of years ago and now the one they replaced it with is being recalled again. We have one on the way to us. The process online was simple but bring your existing fire extinguisher with you to the computer. They need a lot of information off of it.

Rather than relying in various "reprinted" lists, simply go to the actual CPSC website (here: https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/ki...-discharge-and ) for the full US list, as well as a link to the Canadian counterpart.
