Bob </div></BLOCKQUOTE>I am new to this post stuff so I hope this works. We just returned from the Grand Canyon in a 2007 SOuthwind. We could not get up the hill in Albuquerque on I40 west. Drove to a Ford dealer and they did tests claiming nothing wrong. Left reluctantly and headed back up the same hill. A slow 50 but made it with no problem. I think they did something but did not tell me. I lost significant power and the Tack went over 5000 to get up at 30 the first time. Whatever they did not do it workded.

I have the same year and engine. First of all what do you define as altitude and what type of inclines? I go from 6'000 to 7'500 feet, 16 percent grades at 90+ degrees. Because of the hairpin turns I slow to 5 then accelerate to 15 in 1st. then switch to second. On the other side I go from sea level to 8'400 feet at 90+ degrees with no problem, hitting the summit at 35 to 45. We also leave the air on.
On our recent trip at 104+ at 8,000' I did notice some power loss but not down to 5. I turned the air down and it made a big difference. I recently put a freeflow exhaust on it which gave me a good power gain on the inclines. The engine was recently tuned, plugs, wire syn. oil, etc.
If you are in low gear on a 16% grade you should be able to accelerate from a stop to 15 mph.

Most probably vapor lock. We experienced similar problems with both a Dodge pickup when towing and once more with a class A motorhome with a Chevy motor. In both cased I purchased a high pressure electric fuel pump which I inserted in the line just after the tank. Solved my problem on both occasions.

Just an update we drove fine for 2 days to get home the weather was cooler so I am guessing it was a vapor lock I made an appointment with the shop to check it out.
Forest Grump where is that 16 percent grade I sure want to avoid that even when it is in good shape I hate 9 p/c I cant imagine 16

Highway 18 from Lucerne in the Mojave up to Big Bear Lake. Big Trucks are warned about the grade. During fires BB Airport becomes a heliport and I've seen jet fuel laden tankers coming up and down.
Winter is even more fun.

On fuel injected engines with evap. systems and pumps already mounted in the tank vapor lock is almost a non issue. It was a common occurrence in units where the pump is outside the tank and must pull rather then being in the tank and pushing fuel. A 91 ford 460 may have two fuel pumps 1 in tank primer or low pressure pump and 1 external high pressure pump. You may already have it solved with the filter.

Some of the mid 90's Fords were known for bad fuel pumps and vapor locking was an issue even I had to deal with. If the filter does not fix the problem you may want to have the pressure checked coming off the pump. Good luck and keep us posted.

CALIBRATION:

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit a lack of power or a no start condition. This condition may be diagnosed as an exhaust restriction caused by a plugged catalytic converter and/or muffler. Idle quality may be poor during both cold and warm engine temperatures.
ACTION:
Determine if the catalyst is plugged and replace as necessary. Replace the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with a new PCM which has a new operating strategy, the Idle Speed Control (ISO) Actuator and the Expansion Chamber. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

^ LACK OF POWER/POOR PERFORMANCE - 4.9L, 5.0L, 5.8L AND 7.5L - RESTRICTED FUEL FILTER
LIGHT TRUCK:

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include 1993 model year vehicles.
ISSUE:
It is recommended that the frame mounted fuel filter be replaced at regular intervals of 15,000 miles (24,000 km)/15 month intervals. This is more frequent than the 22,500 miles (36,200 km)/22 month intervals stated in the Service Manuals. This shorter interval is necessary because of the changing nature of fuels available. A partially clogged or restricted fuel filter may cause such driveability symptoms as poor performance, lack of power and hard starting.
ACTION:
Replace the frame mounted fuel filters at 15,000 miles (24,000 km)/15 month intervals.

Just an update for anyone interested I am often curious about how others problems were resolved so thought I would post my solution.
we had the motorhome in the shop last week and the computer said change the O2 sensor so next week when we go on our next trip we'll see if that fixed it .
