MB Sprinter

Hi,
Buying my first MBS a 2022 Thor Quantum MB24 with 12,200 miles on it. The dealer added on an extended warranty for chassis and coach. There is no warranty left on the chassis because the sprinter was put into service in 2021 so the 3 yr warranty has expired. Do think the extended warranty is worth it? It’s for 4yrs or 60,000 miles. Has anyone with a MBS ever had to use the extended warranty?
Thanks,
Tom

Only you can determine if an extended service plan (not warranty) is worth it. For some it's peace of mind, especially to those who know nothing about nor can do their own repairs. For others, it's a waste of money as the chances of getting out of it what you paid into it is slim to none.

Extended warranties are a huge cash cow for both dealers that sell them and the companies that administer them.

A very long time ago my college major was in quality control. It didn't do me much good in my eventual career as a firefighter, but I did learn why extended warranties are a bad investment. The reason we learned is called the "Bathtub Curve". If you plot the number of failures of a part or system in the vertical axis and the length of time in service in the horizontal, you end up plotting a bathtub shaped curve. Parts and systems fail more often when they are new because of manufacturing or assembly defects, and they fail more often when they wear out. Extended warranties are set up to specifically capture the portion in between when failures are relatively low, and that's why they are such huge money makers. There are exceptions of course, but the smart money is taking that cash you would have spent on the extended warranty and putting it into a high yield savings account to save for eventual repairs.

How does the Sprinter chassis go into service before Thor upfitted it?

My 23 Winnebago is upfitted from a 22 Sprinter. Since it wasn’t sold to me until 23, the three-year sprinter warranty doesn’t run out until 26. Your sprinter warranty should be good through 25.

Mercedes has extended the emissions related warranty to 10 years, if the unit has had the AEM. Look for a label on the underside of the hood.

I have a 2016 Sprinter - I had 4 MB warranty repairs, 2 NoX sensor failures, ambient air sensor(covered under emissions), one rear wheel speed sensor (safety recall). The RV has 69K miles, I put 30K of those on the unit. I have had no significant issues.

On the house side, there have been many many repairs. From simple fixes to replacing a slide mechanism. Fortunately, I'm skilled enough to do the work.

If I had bought an extended service plan, it would have been almost worthless.
Just knowing that the RV would be sitting in a dealer lot, waiting for a diagnosis, then waiting for the authorization from the plan, then waiting on parts, then waiting for a service appointment made the decision easier for me.
