Has anyone had any experience with registering and establishing residency in NC? We have seen something on the NC state website that sales tax on a motor home is 3% up to a maximum of $1,500, which seems almost too good to be true. Can any one verify that?

We assume that at a minimum we will have to establish residency in NC. How difficult is this, besides getting a driver's license, registering our cars and registering to vote? It probably won't be as easy as SD, but hopefully not a major challenge. As for a license, we understand that the only paperwork we will need to prove residency is a bank statement with a NC address on it. OK, so almost as easy as SD. Again, has anyone had experience that could verify this.

What about the annual renewals and inspections?

Lastly, does NC require a special driver's license for a tag axle motor coach?

SD is 3% as well.
Also jury duty is a consideration. Sioux Falls (Minnehaha county) and most other counties (maybe all) excuse full timers from it. Is there a state income tax in SC? None in SD.

Yes there is State income tax in NC. There are also annual vehicle inspections unlike S Dakota. We moved our domicile from NC to SD last year.

I live in NC. It's true that sales tax is capped at $1500.00. You will also have to pay sales tax on each of your other vehicles. You also have to pay a personal property tax on each of your vehicles every year. The personal property tax on my MH is $800.00 this year, registration is $33.00. NC has a state income tax. Annual safety inspections are $13.00 for a motor home, $30.00 for cars. Vehicle insurance is pretty reasonable. So, on the surface, NC may be attractive, you may be better off somewhere else. Personally, I'm thinking of moving back to Florida.

For me, other than financial issues, the downside of having an NC domicile would be having to come back to the state every year to do the vehicle inspections.

I forgot to answer your question regarding driver's license. Yes a class B non-commercial license is required for rigs with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.

We're currently domiciled in NC. Safety inspection is required annually, but can be waived- at least once, in our case. (emission inspection is not required for diesel vehicles) We were in Utah when reg renewal rolled around. NC DMV said if I could email proof that I had chassis, engine, or tire work done recently, they would waive and I could complete renewal online. Done and done. I don't know if this will apply next year, but we're in NC now for a couple of weeks, and that's on our question list.

My read of the DMV regs is that a Class B license is required. I don't currently have one because when we bought our DS a year ago we were told unequivocally by the DMV folks that no different license was required. That'll teach me to trust the DMV people. That too will be dealt with while we're here.

We initially planned to shift domicile to SD, but found that the one thing that requires time spent there is the CC permit (30 days). We haven't had the opportunity to stop for thirty in SD enroute, so for now we retain NC to keep our NC permits valid. We are looking at alternatives.

PS...... one glitch we encountered: When we initially went to register our coach, the clerk told us we had to have an S&B address, although we found no such requirement in writing. That evening I went to change our DL address online, and I found that the computer accepted our mail drop address for DL purposes. [for those who don't know, NC DMV maintains separate offices to deal with DL issues on the one hand, and vehicle issues on the other] We both waited until our new DLs arrived with the mail drop address on them, then used them to confirm address legitimacy for coach registration. That worked.

Great information. For a whole bunch of reasons we need NC at least for the next couple of years and it appears that while there are better alternatives, there could also be worst alternatives. Moving from VA to NC means similar tax implications so for the time being we don't loose on that front.

CC = Concealed Carry handgun permit.
