Just thought I would get some feedback. I'm looking at buying a new '05 motorhome and need some advice on what to offer. Typically 25-28% off retail on a current year coach is about right. But those numbers probably ought to go out the window when dealing with a new coach that is about to become 2 years old. Anyone been there or have any thoughts?

Hey guys, you're picking my curiosity, Jestme13 are you telling me that if you're dealing on a used MH you should not pay more then 65-70% of the asking price ?

They are talking abount a "NEW" leftover 2005 motorhome. By the book it has already depreciated substantially because it is two model years old as the 2007's are starting to be previewed and marketed.

For example lets say a new Journey M-33V-WKHRS with 500 miles on it is worth roughly $127,000 how much would a leftover 2005 be worth? According to the NADA the high retail would be around $96,000. With that in mind would you pay the sticker price on that 2005 or offer 30 or 40 thousand dollars less?

On used it can become more interesting. I bought my Vectra about half a year ago. Although the asking price was around $30,000 I offered $16,000 and finally settled at $18,000. Asking is not getting and the bottom line can be a moving target that if you play your cards right can be 30% to 50% below the asking on a used RV.

JF, the topic is concerning a new coach that has been sitting on the sales lot and never been titled. A used coach is something that has different guidelines. The value of anything is only what someone is willing to give for it.

I think pricing is the same as it's always been. The dealer will try to make as much as they can.

We were looking a 2005 Navigator in Texas this last winter, this coach was one of the first 05s make in middle 2004 and the 2007 were just about to be debuted. We thought for sure the dealer would want to move the coach, but that wasn't the case. Then to top it off, the dealer bought this coach along with a bunch of other models in a distressed deal from the factory, because another dealer went out of business. The amount the dealer paid for the coach was way below the actual dealer invoice of the first 2005s. The dealer thought this coach was worth gold. No way it was going to be 3 years old.

The coach may be untitled and new by definition, but as soon as the title is assigned and you drive it off the lot it is a 2 year old "used" coach. I don't think I would consider paying any more than NADA high retail for used, maybe offer a bit less. Anything near the new cost would put you financially upside down as soon as you took delivery, and continue for some time to come.

Also one has to consider that a vehicle that has not be driven for 2 years can be far worse off than one that has seen regular use. One could be taking a chance on an engine or tranny failure down the road that even if covered under warrenty is still a major pain to deal with. Tire aging is another issue that comes to mind as does oxidation and sun damage to roofs, vent lids, awnings etc. Nothing stopped aging just because it wasn't used. Two years of weathering still occured.

I knocked 28% off and all warrenties still apply. 3 and 36 on chassis and 24 months on coach. Get it in writing. Scotty.

I agree with ya Wizard. For example (even though its very old) I bought my 1970 Shasta that had a sticker price of $2,400 at a dealer, for a mere $500. I think they figured that they can make more on commission on a new class A than the final price would be on the Shasta. Plus it might have helped that I came close to "moving in" the dealers showroom with the frequency of my visits..lol.

JF - Regarding ebay... You missed the best buying time there for a while. Prices were excellent over the winter as long as you did not mind traveling a bit to pick it up. The drawback, when it is far away it is tough to check the RV out before you buy.

As other posters have stated, sitting for two years is hard on the coach. And remember that as soon as you title it, it is a two plus year old vehicle. If you know retail sticker, divide it by 1.4. That will give you dealer invoice. After one year, wholesale is 10-15% below invoice. Then take another 10% off that for wholesale for a two year old. That's about what I would pay. Not much more than that. If they won't make the deal, there are plenty of motorhomes on the market. Must be a reason that it is still available after all this time.

I feel compelled to comment since we purchased our first RV , a 2003 Itasca Horizon , when the dealer marked it down after having it on his lot for over 300 days. We were not aware of the term "LOT ROT" . Let me say that I will never do this again. The first year was a series of trips to get things fixed that should not have been broken and items that were missing because they were removed to put on other coaches when they needed a quick part that was not on hand. The combination of the usual quality problems and the missing and broken items made the initial experiance of owning a MH a real pain. I have often bought a vehicle at the end of the model year to get a better price, but that thinking doesn't work in my opinion with a "LOT ROT" RV. If we ever buy another new RV I will order it and go the factory and watch it built.
