Newbie Q...paying for power and the RV park

Hi,

Trying to do some advance budgeting for when we get a rig and hit the road...

If you stay at the same RV park for two weeks or a month, is the power included in the rental or do they meter you and bill it separately?

Thanks.

Jerry

My experience.......elec. service is included with the fee you pay to use the space. We have been in our current location for a month with no additional charge......I have heard of campgrounds that meter the service, but include up to a certain amount of elec. free.......really depends on campground.....

in our experience power is usually metered with a monthly rate but the monthly rate is usually the best deal (except for a seasonal rate).

Month or more ,the elect is billed separate. There are of course exceptions ( some KOA's that I've stayed at , don't charge for electric on their monthly or more rates. Thats not the norm. ( their rates are also higher to compensate) .

My experience is just the opposite. Electric is an additional charge when you rent by the month. Same parks, if you rent daily or weekly, electricity is included with your rental fee.

I am currently in a monthly, the averaged daily rate is $23.50 plus electricity. Same spot for a week is $38.57 a day, electricity included.

If you pay by the day, the electric is usually included in the fee. If you pay by the month, some will bill you separately for the electric. There's usually a pretty big discount for paying by the month instead of daily.

Okay, on the monthly you're paying about $700 for the month. How much more is the electricity? Thanks.

Where I stayed monthly, electric was separate. One month it was as low as 30 bucks another month it was 150 due to heat pump usage.

Typically monthly or longer stays many CG will have metered spaces or have a fixed charge / month for long term visitors. One place I was on a annual contract and electric was separate at $35/month. Metered of course varies with location and time of year. Can be up to a couple three hundred dollars
a month if air conditioning or electric heat in often use.

this is a question that no one can answer because it all depends on you, what electrical devices you use, the weather/temperature, and how much per Kw the park charges... just like someone's home right next to their neighbor who's bill is $50 cheaper - not even the exact same situations will render the same exact charges because of so many unknown variables.

as the mayor of my small home town years ago, I had many folks come and 'complain' about their electricity bill since our city had it's own electrical department. The main complaint was that their 'neighbor's bill' was so much less than theirs! Their neighbor lived in a similar sized home, but was newer, better insulated, had more efficient air and heat, and did NOT leave their front door open while the air was running!

but to better answer your general electrical charge question, for budgeting:
our experiences in MANY rv parks and campgrounds is this...

- daily; the price is fixed no matter how much you use
- weekly; some could charge extra, but most still include it in your fixed price
- monthly; some include it in the fixed bill, some meter it/charge it to you extra

...we have seen parks who are mostly 'snow birds' who meter it separately, and have seen other monthly parks who include it in the monthly price and you don't have to worry about a separate bill, or how much you use - it is all up to the management and how they want to run their business.
...let's also throw in the fact that some parks offer only 30a service, so you will typically not be able to run both a/c units, or as many heaters, so your charges will be lower simply due to not having as much incoming power to be charged for.

It's hard to say exactly, but if you budget from $50 to $150 per month you should be fine. That's a wild swing, but in temperate months, you'll see the lower number, and in very hot months you'll experience the higher number. In winter, if you use mainly propane to heat, you'll see the lower end, but if you choose electric space heaters, it will be on the higher end.

We're in western NC mountains currently, and there are many RV parks, Campgrounds, Permanent parks, and Private RV sites to choose from. There is one private campground that is $300 monthly, INCLUDING electricity, with 30a service, right on the Creek, mostly Shaded sites, and Cable tv, and no long term commitment. There is another RV Park Resort down the road that is $800 monthly, METERS and charges extra for the electrical usage(15c per Kw I believe), hot tub, pool, 50a service, no cable, free Wifi, NO shade, requires advance reservations, and does not guarantee you will have a spot the next month unless you already reserved it again and paid ahead of time. That's a big swing in pricing between the two, but to each his own!
: )

We are at the KOA in Flagstaff until the end of March. They do not have a monthly rate, but 50amp is included in their weekly rate. On April 1st we will move to another local park that has monthly rates including electricity but charge $2/day extra if you use your air conditioner...

The very nice full-service park we used in the Asheville, NC, area the past two summers has a monthly rate but it includes all services, 50A electric, water, sewer, decent wifi at all sites, and cable tv. The campground is always full, so the monthly rate is not a big discount either. Another park within several miles of there has the opposite "a la carte" pricing, where every service has an additional charge on top of a base rate. That lets them advertise a low price and attract more budget conscious campers. They are mostly full as well. There is no standard or right way.

Monthly or longer stays you will pay elec. separately. You'll get metered. Less then that time and it will be included in your site fee.
