no shore power, complete with small fire

Hi all, fairly new to class c camping, we have a 99 gulfstream conquest 1000, not big but suits us fine. No problems for last 2 yrs. Last trip out hooked up a 2000 watt generator to shore line, our rv does not have an on-board, using the 120 recepticle on the generator. Almost immediately there was a popping sound followed by lots of black smoke from behind and beside the breaker panel under drivers side couch. Dis-connected power got the panel open where I found a silver dollar size diode? and whatever it is connected to smoldering... tried it again in our driveway hooked to an extention cord, and same thing, no power and smoking parts. RV guy can't look at it til next week and we are trying to scoot for the weekend. Any help, please?! Jim

Unfortunately, once you let the magic smoke escape its really hard to get it back in gain. Seriously though, it sounds like something that is going to require replacement parts and/or a trained technician.

Sounds like a MOV surge protection.

Connects line to line or line to ground.

If it is just in there, two wires, one to line and one to ground it can be removed.

But you need to be sure, look for part numbers on it or the panel, google them to see

And I would have somebody knowledgeable look at the adapter you used to connect to that generator. Something was not correctly wired. At a guess, either hot and neutral were reversed, or maybe ground and neutral.
