Oil change question

Last winter we did a 10,000 mile/3 month cross country trip. When we got back home at the end of March I changed the oil and filter (2015 Forester Class C on Chevy Express chassis). I have used Mobil 1 synthetic oil and Mobil 1 filters from my first oil change. We had several home improvement projects over the summer so I only put about 100 miles on the rig since the oil change (2 trips to Chevy dealer for recalls). We don’t have a trip planned until January. My question is should I change the oil and filter again due to the length of time since the last oil change? If yes, oil and filter or just the oil? Thanks

i believe that frequent fluid changes are essential to an engine's well being. cheap insurance.

Change oil by distance not time. Oil doesn't go bad

Nope, don't worry about the oil. There's no mechanism to damage the oil in an engine that isn't running. Worst things that can happen is 1) all the oil will drain off your components and into the pan and 2) condensation will add a little water to the crankcase oil. In order to resolve issue #1, you need to run the engine to circulate the oil. Yes, you'll have more than normal wear until the oil coats everything, but once oil is flowing, it will go everywhere it needs to go in a matter of seconds. To resolve issue #2, you need to get the oil to operating temp and boil all the water out. Easiest way to do that is to drive the rig down the road for half an hour.



I bet you can solve both of those problems by running down to the gas station and topping off the tank. In the future, you might want to take it for a spin around the block every month to 6 weeks. Vehicles don't do well when they sit still for extended periods of time.

Always replace the filter when changing the oil. It holds old oil in it. Volume depends on the filter size and orientation (side to side or up / down). It's cheap insurance. Also make sure the filter gasket is removed with the filter. That mistake years ago cost me a motor. Lesson learned.

I have some classic cars that get driven less than 1,000 miles a year. The normal recommendation in that case is to change at the mfg'er recommended mileage or once a year if fewer miles. Actually, that's how I do the big diesel too as I never reach the recommended 15k ... manual says 15k or 12 mo.

I usually change once a year minimum on a motor vehicle engine. You changed it in March of '19. Right? I'd at least wait until March of '20 unless that January trip is a very long trip.

Not really true, what if you only drove 2,000 miles a year can you wait 5 years to change oil?
