So I've had this thing down almost 3 times now due to dirty slip rings and an initial overhaul among other issues.

Now this time putting it back together I decided to torque the crank bolt to spec with a digital wrench (there is a rubber washer the bolt goes through on the fan hub). Felt stiffer but I figured it was OK. Of course it's on of these bolts where you don't "feel" a stop. Maybe due to rubber compressing?

Now back on the MH didn't even test it like an idiot and starter can barely turn the engine over. Should I even try reaching in there to loosen and retighten by hand?

Recommend you pull it out again. Remove the blower wheel again and see what is out of place and causing the interference. Stop cranking it now to prevent further damage. Good luck!

Hello all,

About to reach wits end with my onan KY 4000 Microlite.

Already dropped unit twice; once to clean slip rings, second to find a questionable wire from rings to stator.

Now this time I torqued the "crank" bolt that holds the fan hub on with the rubber washer underneath it. So how can it be torqued if there is a rubber component? It doesn't really have a "stop" and that seems to overtighten things.

So now the flywheel is harder to turn (I figured it was just loose before) and the starter can barely turn it over. I'm afraid I'll have to drop it again as I cannot stop the fan hub from turning with the cover on.

The only difference is the bolt is much tighter because like I said I tried to use a digital torque wrench.

How do techs tighten them? The bolt never "stops" with the rubber washer!

You have to pull it out and pull the wheel again. You've got an interference problem. The rotor shaft cone end hasn't contacted the wheel and so you are turning the rotor while hogging down on the bolt. Good luck!

I’m at a loss as to what rubber washer your referring to? I don’t remember a rubber washer anywhere.

Def a rubber washer behind that bolt on fan hub. Check the KY spec B parts sheet.

Yes, should be KY spec B.

I loosened and retorqued the bolt. Turn easier now. Definitely was too tight. Hate torquing anything with torque wrench when there is no "hard" stop. Was able to fire it up. Now dealing with another issue in new thread.

I don't believe that they haven't contacted, actually the opposite. I believe the bolt was simply over tightened.

I was able to loosen the bolt and retighten it (I do not recommend this at all if you don't remove the generator and know what you're doing). I believe I could immediately hear the cone release slightly. Don't believe there was interference damage. Runs fine now.
