Onan generator codes?

2015 ACE 30.1 with Onan 4000 generator, decided to exercise it yesterday first time in months, I know but I was lazy. Took a few tries to start then the rpm was up and down then after about a minute or so died. Did this a couple times and got the same results.
Next to the start button on the generator it lists two codes three flashes for "needs service" and four flashes for "over crank." What I have is three flashes, pause and then six flashes. The way it runs I am guessing it is not getting enough fuel. It has plenty of oil and ran fine the last time we needed to use it. I checked the owners manual and could not find anything useful. Thanks in advance, Jim.

These things seem to do better when they're ran all the time but most of us can't remember to do that.
You should be able to find the service manual here;

Sadly code 36 is kind of a generic code. Carb issues are the most common.

You could get lucky and a simple carb cleaning could get it running again. Mine is on its third carburetor. I was finally able to buy an Onan carb after trying since last August. I have mine running with a cheap Chinese carb, so I'm not swapping till it dies. Most likely winter will kill it. I did put a fuel shut-off on the line feeding the carb and I will run it out of gas when I winterize and again after each exercise time.

It is a gummed up carb I am pretty much sure of that after consulting with utube and possible fixes for it. I have not run it for several months and it caught up with me. One possible fix to clean the carb is run fresh gas with Sea Foam through the carb from a can. Run a half hour then let it sit a half hour then run again. It does sound a bit better but not good and keeps shutting off after about 15 minutes.
Looks like I will need to replace the carb so went to
https://shop.cummins.com/CSSNAStore/...6100p&store=US

They got me the correct part number for my carb but do not have any in stock, said I might try checking with dealers. They are proud of this part $390. ouch. Have one coming from Amazon, knockoff from China or somewhere but at least in stock. I will be running it every month from now on, probably get the OEM one when it comes in stock, hope the knockoff works till then. Jim.

When I bought my MH in 2015 my friend I bought it from had just had the coach completely serviced including the Onan 5500 generator.
The generator didn't run right when I first tried it. It would start after several tries but was obviously flooded with fuel and would smoke and the tail pipe was black. I removed the carburetor and disassembled it completely and soaked all the parts in carb cleaner. I reassembled the carb and it didn't run any differently. I did this again with no change. I adjusted the automatic choke and the choke pull off every way possible. My friend told me the generator ran fine before he had it serviced but never started it after he got the coach back from the service center which was less then a month before I bought the coach.
Since owning the coach I have only camped where there was no power a few times. I used my two Honda 2000 generators and didn't run the Onan.
Last year I ordered a new carburetor which is a Chinese knockoff. I didn't put the carb on until this spring after bringing the coach home from storage. I changed the oil, filter and the carb. I hit the prime button for a few seconds the hit the start button. The generator fired right up and ran perfectly. I do run the generator every three or four weeks but haven't had to actually use it yet. I starts and runs smoothly.
With shipping the carb was just over $40. I bought it from Amazon but there are no markings on the box other than a part number and 'Made in China'.
How long will the carb last? I don't know but really what could happen to it other than failing to keep it clean by running the generator so fuel doesn't degrade in the carburetor from lack of use. I have an electric fuel pump and no mechanical pump. I have also installed a toggle switch on the fuel pump ground wire. I can shut the pump down and the generator will run for a bit before running out of fuel. After the engine quits I turn the switch back on so I don't forget. This procedure also helps to prevent fuel spilling over from a full float bowl and causing a flooded condition as you are bouncing down the road when you park and start the generator. I also have two inline fuel filters in the fuel inlet line. One is just before the fuel pump and the other is just after the fuel pump. The reason for the filter after the fuel pump is because I have read where a failure in the fuel pump can result in pieces of material from the failed pump to get pushed into the carburetor and plug the carb up entirely. For less than $5 an extra filter could save a lot of aggravation IMO.

Code 36 says, basically= "shut down without command", which leaves several possibilities: 1) Main tank dropped below 1/4-tank and pump sucking air; 2) carb malfunction, float stiuck/ sticky, 3) clogged fuel filter/ broken/ leaky fuel Hose= (sucking air) BUT MOST LIKELY= 4) intermittent/ FAILING FUEL PUMP, Replacement can be 1-hour DIY $30+/-. The "surging" comes when fuel level starts to drop in float bowl, and (typically) will run 90-minutes or as little as 10 or 3-5-minutes. Surge on start, may smooth out for a period, then surge again and die with No restart until cooled 10-30-minutes?

When you go to store the RV add an appropriate amount of STA-BIL fuel treatment to the gas tank and top it off. Then run the generator for 30 mins under load.

Come spring time she'll fir right up. Been doing this with my RV for years and never an issue.
