Onan KY 4000 life expectency poll?

As the title says, I am looking for real world experience with service life on the Onan KY 4000 model family (Micro-lite 4000, Micro-Quiet 4000, and QG 4000 models only, not the older pre 1990's or larger units). I am asking because mine just crossed the 1,200 hour mark yesterday during our emergency use after hurricane Laura as we were driveway camping at our house. Please only answer if generator received routine scheduled maintenance (oil changes), and failure was beyond economic repair, in other words failed starter, gummed up carburetor, dead control board, don't count for purposes of this poll.

I wish I had a specific answer about gasoline Onans... but the electrical side could, in theory, run forever if serviced.

It's mostly about engine maintenance...

Perhaps, but a lot of the failure stories out there on the internet are about failures in the generator end with multi thousand dollar repair estimates

I reread your OP,, good I voted right LOL.. I have experience with 2 onan 4000 and a 7.5K.

One was low hours ,, ign pick up died 25 years old <250hrs,, typical when they just sit,, that one does not count.. IMO . both others have lots of hours and are fine..

Good luck with poll ....

It is more about years than hours, usually. Some of these have lasted decades but still die in < 500 hours using them is best. We had one in our 1990 Tioga that we used at NASCAR races and chasing balloons. Had close to 3000 hours when we sold. Was religious about 100 hour oil changes. The KY family is a 3600 RPM engine and plsh oil lube. It does have a cast iron sleeve. Not as robust as 1800 RPM and pressure lubed generators but its all about maintenance. Adjust your valves, they will recess and eventually wear valve guides.

Keep up on the maintenance, you got plenty of hours left.
