Onan MCCK generator problem

I just acquired this generator. It is in a 1971 houseboat. It started with new plugs and wires and ran just fine. It wouldn't start with the switch but apparently this was a problem the previous owner had because a remote start switch was hooked up to the solenoid. If I press the start switch you can hear the fuel pump kick on and while holding that if I press the remote starter switch it would crank and run just fine. I could then release the switch and it would run fine. It ran for about 2 hours off and on with me checking different things. The last time I tried to start it, it wouldn't run unless I continued holding the start switch which apparently also Powers the fuel pump and energizes the coil. Release the switch and the engine dies. Even when running like this the generator was engaging and powering the boat. Suggestions? I'm a little lost. I don't have a service manual or do I even know where to find the serial number to determine the exact model. I do know it's a very old Generator, but it seems to run fine when it's running. It has plenty of oil and coolant
