Paint damage from trees

Hi,

My 2008 Itasca Latitude has some paint damage at the very top od the coach, its not noticeable but I know its there.

I called Winnie and was told it was cosmetic only. Problem is finding a place that can work on a 38ft coach. All damage looks to be from trees.

If I repair it I am sure it will just happen again.

From what I can see from your photos , the problem appears to be with the paint's clear coat pealing .
There have been a few posts on DIY clear coat repair .
Have you tried a search on the issue?

I thought it was tree branches that did the damage.

Wide spread for branch damage ; more that likely the clear coat , possibly because , the area where the damage is visible ; 1. gets more sun exposure, 2. might not have gotten the best of coverage during the factory paint/clearcoat process, 3 If it's anything like mine, , doesn't get the cleaning and waxing that the rest of the coach side does..

Thanks Skip,

I suppose I better get it repaired before it gets worse.

I tried to get the dealer to pay for it but they dug in on it.

Problem with clear coat, you can fix that spot and it will poop up somewhere else.

It happened to my front cap, I let it peel until I thought it was finish. Repaired the area then it peeled past area, I should have sanded and painted the whole thing.

It only seems to be the area over the awning.

I spoke a local shop today and they can only handle a 30 footer (mine is 38). I may have to go further afield for a quote.

1 can of 2K spray max should do that area fine.

Unicorn Driver,
The infamous "Clear coat peeling" is a very common occurance on not only motorhomes (primarily the roof radius's) but, also many, many cars/trucks etc. from just about all manufacturers. All you have to do is, drive through just about any parking lot in America and, you'll see at least one car with peeling clear coat on the hood, trunk, roof etc. It happens a lot.

As for motorhomes, as stated, it primarily happens on the roof radius where the transition from horizontal to vertical is more exposed or, I should say it's more concentrated on the radius than other spots. Lots of theories on how and why it happens. Our coach, an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the CAT C-7 330HP, has for almost all of its life, been stored in doors. We do have a small amount of clear peeling but, you have to look for it. It's really not noticeable from the ground.

But on yours, well, without seeing closer pictures, what's been suggested is pretty much the norm. It doesn't happen on all of them but, it happens a lot.
Scott

I sold PPG and DuPont automotive paint to body shops for years, taught many "younger lads" how to paint. What you have (from what I can see in the photos) is the clear coat peeling away. This is easily fixed by what we called a "scuff and shoot". They will sand the clear coat and then re-clear coat the area. When you get it repaired be sure to have ALL the painted pannel done at the same time. If someone tells you they can "spot repair" it, ask to see some of their other spot repairs first! If done incorrectly and not feathered right the edge of the clear coat will let go and your problem is back. Stay with quality products in 2K components (product +hardner) NO SINGLE STAGE products. Hope this helps.
