Just my experience so far.

I've heard pretty much the same out here, if one place won't do it, another will.
We usually get ours filled Stateside, better prices and no hassles. Used to grill off the RV supply at home, until we bought the Navion. No propane quick connect supplied from the factory, and still trying to decide whether it's worth crawling around under it to install one, or to just switch to portable cylinders. We picked up two small (5/10 lbs) cylinders on our last trip, so we may just stick with that. They don't take up much room. When we stop somewhere for the main tank, it's easy to fill the portables at the same time.

IN the USA there are NO re-certifications for MH permanently mounted ASME Propane TANKS------PERIOD
DOT requires re-certification on PORTABLE Propane CYLINDERS
12YR after date of MFG (10yr confusion exists but new reg is NOT implemented YET!)
Visual inspection good for 5yrs...then repeat
USA..NO recert requirement on TANKS!
Any pump jockey says there is....HAVE THEM PROVE IT with the Statue/Document which will NOT apply to permanent mounted ASME TANKS

Or, just move on down the road, and the next place will fill you up. It's their loss of business for not knowing or understanding the laws and rules/regs.

I had a gas ticket which has since expired but the statement was true. The tank does not require any sort of new certification.

If refused go elsewhere. What is the problem?

So is there a way that the tank is marked for the visual? or does everybody try to keep charging for it everytime after the last cert is over 5 years ago?

I have learned to avoid U-Haul for anything other than a portable tank. Too many places that did not have a clue or "went to training on that". Dealers usually have more experience and often charge less because you are one markup down in the chain.

At that time I had no idea of where the 'elsewhere' was located. I have since found out that just north of Quartszite on the 95 north hwy there is a cool little propane fill up station that just pumps and fills as requested.

I was wondering if places that fill grill tanks fill installed tanks.

The simple answer around here is ... sometimes
We have RV parks and RV stores in our area that sell propane, and they are well equipped to handle the on-board tanks and tend to know the regulations. They're also usually a bit higher, but at least in our case, we don't use enough propane for it to matter that much. The additional convenience is well worth the additional expense. Even a few miles to make trip just for propane will use enough fuel to offset a lower price.
We also tend to keep the tank topped off. If we notice a park we're at has propane and we're at or below half tank we'll just top off while there.

Pump jockey says your tank is to old. Sorry, you might try to educate him, but he does not have to prove a thing to you. And if you wiz in his Cheerios, is there no chance of something going wrong?
